  1. 1. Towards a detailed understanding of the red blood cell storage lesion : and its consequences for in vivo survival following transfusion

    Författare :Andreas Hult; Christer Malm; Per-Arne Oldenborg; Martin L. Olsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Red blood cell; erythrocyte; transfusion; macrophage; phagocytosis; storage lesion; eryptosis; Class A scavenger receptor; transfusion medicine; transfusionsmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Red blood cells (RBCs) are vital for oxygen delivery to tissues and constitute the vast majority of all cells in blood. After leaving the red bone marrow as mature cells, RBCs have a lifespan of approximately 120 days before they are removed from the circulation by macrophages, mainly in the spleen and liver. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Clinical Aspects of Bleeding and Transfusion in Cardiac Surgery

    Författare :Lisa Ternström; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiac surgery; bleeding; fibrinogen; blood transfusion; transfusion guidelines; adherence;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract Excessive bleeding after cardiac surgery is a serious complication that is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. The bleeding is multifactorial and influenced by both surgical factors and impaired haemostasis. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Free oscillation rheometry in the assessment of platelet quality

    Författare :Nahreen Tynngård; Gösta Berlin; Tomas Lindahl; James AuBuchon; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Coagulation; elasticity; platelets; rheology; transfusion; Transfusion medicine; Transfusionsmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Platelets play an important role in the haemostatic process in order to seal damaged blood vessels. The platelets form a platelet plug at the damaged area and prevent blood loss. Once the damage to the vessel wall has been covered, the platelets retract the coagulum, to allow the blood to flow freely in the vessel. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Aspects on bleeding and transfusion in elective orthopaedic surgery. Clinical and experimental studies

    Författare :Malin S Carling; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; orthopaedic surgery; fibrinogen; factor XIII; surgical bleeding; transfusion;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Perioperative bleeding complications are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. One way to minimize perioperative bleeding and transfusion is to identify patients at risk of bleeding. Preoperative fibrinogen plasma concentration and factor XIII (FXIII) activity may be indicators of perioperative bleeding and transfusion. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fat contamination of pericardial suction blood in cardiac surgery : clinical and experimental studies in perspectives of transfusion logistics

    Författare :Micael Appelblad; Gunnar Engström; Krister Lindmark; Anders Jeppsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Surgery; blood transfusion; cardiopulmonary bypass; pericardial suction blood; fat contamination; lipid microemboli; density separation; surface adsorption; Kirurgi; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: During cardiac surgery aided by cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) the autotransfusion of pericardial suction blood (PSB) is regarded mandatory to limit allogeneic blood exposure. PSB is however proposed as a source of lipid microemboli and to contribute to brain damage. LÄS MER
