  1. 1. Novel Statistical Methods in Quantitative Genetics : Modeling Genetic Variance for Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping and Genomic Evaluation

    Författare :Xia Shen; Örjan Carlborg; Lars Rönnegård; William Hill; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; statistical genetics; quantitative trait loci; genome-wide association study; genomic selection; genetic variance; hierarchical generalized linear model; linear mixed model; random effect; heteroscedastic effects model; variance-controlling genes; Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis develops and evaluates statistical methods for different types of genetic analyses, including quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis, genome-wide association study (GWAS), and genomic evaluation. The main contribution of the thesis is to provide novel insights in modeling genetic variance, especially via random effects models. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Uncertainty Estimation in Models of Multivariate Trait Evolution on Given Phylogenies

    Författare :Woodrow Hao Chi Kiang; Krzysztof Bartoszek; Fredrik Ronquist; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phylogenetic comparative methods; Branching stochastic processes; Fylogenetiska jämförande metoder; Förgrenade stokastiska processer;

    Sammanfattning : Phylogenetic comparative methods are a set of statistical methods that model the evolutionary history of species, especially in the context where one has data on certain traits of related extant species that have evolved over a phylogenetic tree in accordance to an underlying stochastic process. This thesis presents a Hessian-based closed-form asymptotic confidence region that covers a wide family of Gaussian continuous-trait evolution models; the result has been implemented in an R package. Sammanfattning : The existence of new technologies, implemented in efficient platforms and workflows has made massive genotyping available to all fields of biology and medicine. Genetic analyses are no longer dominated by experimental work in laboratories, but rather the interpretation of the resulting data. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Evolution of Plants : a mathematical perspective

    Författare :Magnus Lindh; Åke Brännström; Jacob Johansson; Mats G Larson; Lennart Persson; Claus Rüffler; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; plants; mathematics; optimization; optimal control; adaptive dynamics; flowering; seasons; tree crown; drought; taproot; trade-off; strategy; trait; ESS; NPP; LAI; Red Queen; Mathematics; matematik;

    Sammanfattning : The Earth harbors around 300 000 plant species. The rich and complex environment provided by plants is considered a key factor for the extraordinary diversity of the terrestrial fauna by, for example, providing food and shelter. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Function follows Form : Trait-based approaches to climate change effects on wetland vegetation and functioning

    Författare :Helen Moor; Jon Norberg; Andrew Gonzalez; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Functional traits; Plant community ecology; Trait distributions; Wetlands; Ecosystem functioning; Ecosystem Services; Climate change; Dispersal; Metacommunity modelling; naturresurshushållning; Natural Resources Management;

    Sammanfattning : Climate change and habitat fragmentation are altering the structure and functioning of plant communities world-wide. Understanding how, why and with what consequences are major challenges of ecology today. Trait-based approaches focus on functional rather than taxonomic identity to facilitate process-based explanation and prediction. LÄS MER
