Paper 1: “Do Countries with Lax Environmental Regulations Have a Comparative Advantage in Polluting Industries?” We study whether lax environmental regulations induce comparative advantages, causing the least-regulated countries to specialize in polluting industries. Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of a collection of essays on endogenous trade policies and may briefly be summarized as follows. The first essay empirically examines determinants of bilateral trade protection originating from normative trade theory, endogenous trade-policy studies, and political arguments put forward in the public debate. 13. The exchange of cotton : Ugandan peasants, colonial market regulations and the organisation of international cotton trade, 1904-1918
Sammanfattning : Between 1904 and 1918, the British colonial administration in Uganda regulated the cotton industry in order to maintain and improve the quality of the exported cotton. The main topics of the dissertation are: Why were these regulations enacted and who initiated them? The dissertation analyses the impact of the organisation of the international cotton trade on the buying practices in the local Uganda cotton market. LÄS MER
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the relationship between domestic political processes and interindustry variations in unilateral and multilateral trade policies. The literature on endogenous protection is extended to account for the potential importance of information flows, to explore the consequences of adapting the analyses to political systems which differ from the American kind, and to build a framework suitable for empirical examination. Sammanfattning : Modern food production is a complex, globalized system in which what we eat and how it is produced are increasingly disconnected. This thesis examines some of the ways in which global trade has changed the mix of inputs to food and feed, and how this affects food security and our perceptions of sustainability. LÄS MER
