11. Integrating Efficacy and Toxicity in Preclinical Anticancer Drug Development : Methods and Applications
Sammanfattning : Preclinical testing is an important part of cancer drug development. The aim of this thesis was to establish and evaluate preclinical in vitro methods useful in the development of new anticancer drugs. In paper I, the development of non-clonogenic assays (FMCA-GM) using CD34+ stem cells for assessment of haematological toxicity was described. LÄS MER
12. Internalization mechanisms of cell-penetrating peptides : Structure-activity relationships, cellular distribution and membrane toxicity studies
Sammanfattning : Transport of substances with pharmaceutical potential over the plasma membrane has been pushed a great step forward with the discovery of short cationic polypeptides, known as cell-penetrating peptides (CPP). Since then, the internalization mechanism and cargo delivery properties of CPPs has been extensively studied. LÄS MER
13. Uptake and toxicity of brominated flame retardants and pesticides : Studies on littoral organisms and model communities
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, brackish and freshwater littoral model communities (microcosms) of varying size and complexity were used to study the effects of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and pesticides. The brackish water microcosms consisted of natural water, sediment and associated organisms, while the larger freshwater microcosms also contained submersed macrophytes (Elodea canadensis). LÄS MER
14. Copepods in Skeletonema-dominated food webs : Toxicity and nutritional quality as factors controlling copepod-diatom interactions
Sammanfattning : My thesis focuses on copepod-diatom interactions, specifically on the effects of food quality and toxicity on copepod feeding, reproductive success and behavior but as a frame, also includes a quantitative evaluation of copepod carbon requirements compared to other trophic plankton groups. My aim was to evaluate the function of copepods in diatom-dominated spring blooms. LÄS MER
15. Chlorinated Paraffins: improved understanding of their bioaccumulation and toxicity in Daphnia magna
Sammanfattning : Chlorinated paraffins (CPs) are industrial chemicals, mainly used as flame retardants, plasticizers and metal cutting fluids. Their production has reached historically high levels in the last decade, with an annual production exceeding one million tonnes. LÄS MER
