21. Long acting local anaesthetics - a study in rats
Sammanfattning : Local anaesthetics provide excellent pain relief after central and peripheral nerve blocks. However, in many clinical situations there is an insufficient duration of action to allow effective treatment of long-term pain with single injection techniques. This problem became the focus of the present studies. LÄS MER
22. Integrative approaches in ecotoxicological testing: Implications for biomarker development and application
Sammanfattning : Ecotoxicology aims to understand toxic effects of chemicals in the environment. Effects can be observed at different levels of the biological organization, from molecular to ecosystem level. LÄS MER
23. In vitro testing of drug sensitivity in tumor cells from effusion
Sammanfattning : Malignant mesothelioma has a mean overall survival of around 1 year and lung adenocarcinoma with pleural spread has a mean overall survival of around 5 months. Both diseases cause fluid accumulation in the pleura, which is drained to alleviate associated symptoms such as shortness of breath. This fluid oft contains exfoliated tumor cells. LÄS MER
24. Metal Particles – Hazard or Risk? Elaboration and Implementation of a Research Strategy from a Surface and Corrosion Perspective
Sammanfattning : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. LÄS MER
25. Exploring toxicity and fate of metal-based particles in the lung : from mechanistic screening to lung deposition modelling
Sammanfattning : We are all exposed to small particles in the air that we breath and some of them will contain metals in a dose and form that may be harmful. In addition, the field of nanotechnology holds great promises, but an increased production of nanoparticles leads to a higher risk of exposure. LÄS MER
