21. Metal Speciation and Toxicity in Sewage Sludge
Sammanfattning : Increasingly stringent controls on metal concentrations in sewage sludge destined for agricultural application provided a basis for the study of the relevance of metal speciation in sewage sludge. A comprehensive literature review identified difficulties in relating metal speciation through single chemical extractions to plant uptake and soil toxicity. LÄS MER
22. Effects of pharmaceuticals on natural microbial communities: Tolerance development, mixture toxicity and synergistic interactions
Sammanfattning : Due to our extensive use of pharmaceuticals, low concentrations (picomol-nanomol/L) end up in the aquatic environment. Antibiotics comprise a group of pharmaceuticals specifically designed to disrupt microbial biochemical processes, and might therefore in particular have detrimental effects on microbial communities in the environment. 23. Change of toxicity during secondary treatment of industrial sludge containing nitroaromatics
Sammanfattning : Wastewater treatment plants in Sweden are facing a great challenge due to the prohibition of depositing organic waste which gained legal force in January 2005. Biological and commercial available alternatives to disposal are composting and anaerobic digestion. LÄS MER
24. The Round Window Membrane - Gateway to the Cochlea : A Morphological and Electrophysiological study
Sammanfattning : Topical treatment of several inner ear diseases through the round window membrane (RWM) might be feasible in the near future. Bacteria toxins, ototoxic drugs and noise trauma seem to harm the inner ear by a common pathway which involves, excessive outflow of the afferent neurotransmitter glutamate and formation of nitric oxide (NO), which can severely damage cells/nerve endings and lead to cell death. 25. Cassava Processing: Safety and Protein Fortification
Sammanfattning : Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important and cheap source of carbohydrate in tropical regions, particularly in Sub-Sahara Africa. Cassava as a human food is a good source of energy as it has a comparable high energy density of about 610 kJ/100 g fresh root. LÄS MER
