  1. 6. Bioremediation of Toxic Metals for Protecting Human Health and the Ecosystem

    Författare :Aminur Rahman; Abul Mandal; Jana Jass; Björn Olsson; Pawel Kaszycki; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Heavy Metals; Pollution; Accumulation; Remediation; Human Health; Bacteria; Genome Sequencing; de novo Assembly; Gene Prediction; Biology; Biologi; Bioteknik;

    Sammanfattning : Heavy metal pollutants, discharged into the ecosystem as waste by anthropogenic activities, contaminate drinking water for millions of people and animals in many regions of the world. Long term exposure to these metals, leads to several lethal diseases like cancer, keratosis, gangrene, diabetes, cardio- vascular disorders, etc. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Removal of metals from contaminated waters : Evaluating the use of synthetic adsorbents and green algae biomass

    Författare :Roxana Quiroga Flores; Bioteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; metals; toxicity; Adsorption; uptake; arsenic; cadmium; lead; methylmercury;

    Sammanfattning : Metal contamination of water bodies has attracted global attention owing to its environmental toxicity, abundance and persistence. Metals such as arsenic, cadmium and mercury are of greater concern since they are toxic even at low concentrations. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Algal-Bacterial Photobioreactors for the Degradation of Toxic Organic Pollutants

    Författare :Raul Munoz; Bioteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Bioteknik; Biotechnology; symbiosis.; nutrient removal; heavy metals removal; Algal-bacterial systems photobioreactors; toxic organic pollutants;

    Sammanfattning : The aerobic biodegradation of toxic organic volatile contaminants is always limited by the low aqueous solubility of O2. Therefore, intensive bubbling or surface aeration is required to supply the bacterial community with sufficient O2 to carry out pollutant mineralization. This can cause the hazardous volatilization of toxic volatile contaminants. LÄS MER

  4. 9. Interactions between calcium and heavy metals in Norway spruce : Accumulation and binding of metals in wood and bark

    Författare :Ann Helén Österås; Maria Greger; Lena Kautsky; Douglas L. Godbold; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Waste products from the forest industry are to be spread in forests in Sweden to counteract nutrient depletion due to whole tree harvesting. This may increase the bioavailability of calcium (Ca) and heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) in forest soils. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Interactions between metals and bacteria : Importance for metal speciation

    Författare :Lena Brynhildsen; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to contribute to the understanding of the interactions between metals and microorganisms with respect to* Toxicity of metals (Cd, Cu, Hg, Zn)* Mineralization of metal-organic complexes (citric acid, histidine)* Metal adsorption (Cs, Sr, Eu, Hg, Zn, As)Most of the studies were made on the gram-negative bacterium Klebsiella oxytoca, but the work also involved a Serratia as as well as mixed cultures of microorganisms from soil systems.Most previous studies, reported in the literature, on the toxic effects of metals on microorganisms have been performed at high nutrient levels, despite the fact that microorganisms in nature normally live under energy-limited conditions.
