  1. 6. Blood saving in orthopaedic surgery

    Författare :Jan Widman; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : A substantial blood loss frequently accompanies total hip and knee replacement surgery. This is a potential health risk and associated with increased need for allogenic blood transfusions. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Brain plasticity and hand function

    Författare :Anders Björkman; Malmö Handkirurgi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatologi; Neurology; neuropsychology; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi; Kirurgi; ortopedi; traumatology; Surgery; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; hand function; nerve injury; brain plasticity; orthopaedics;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of cortical reorganisational changes following experimental deafferentation and peripheral nerve injury and apply the concept of brain plasticity to enhance sensory re-education following peripheral nerve injury and repair in the hand. In the first two papers the effects on hand function of contralateral deafferentation was investigated. LÄS MER

  3. 8. Critical evaluation of nitric oxide as an immuno-modulator in humans

    Författare :Lars Hållström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction: Nitric oxide (NO) has been shown to possess anti-inflammatoryproperties. In a porcine endotoxin model the combination of intravenously (iv) administrated glucocorticoid (gc) and inhaled NO (iNO) compared to gc or iNO given separately, blunted the inflammatory response in vital organs. 4. 9. Translational studies on mechanical hemostasis and coagulopathy in trauma

    Författare :Andreas Brännström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Trauma, in terms of physical injury, is the leading cause of death and disability among children and young adults worldwide. Hemorrhage and coagulation dysfunction are two important causes of preventable deaths after traumatic injuries. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Influence of Oxidative Stress on Muscle and Bone

    Författare :Bengt Östman; Karl Michaëlsson; Lars Nordsletten; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bone mineral density; coenzyme Q10; exercise; ischaemia; isprostanes; muscle; oxidative stress; oxygen radicals; reperfusion; tocopherol; Orthopaedics; Ortopedi; ortopedi; Orthopaedics;

    Sammanfattning : Reactive oxygen species (ROS) induce oxidative stress and although are primarily recognized for playing a deleterious biological role, they can be beneficial to cell systems. ROS are extremely short-lived and normally tightly regulated by antioxidant defence systems. LÄS MER
