1. Torn, Spun and Chopped : Various Limits of String Theory
Sammanfattning : For the first time in the history of physics we stand in front of a theory that might actually serve as a unification of it all - string theory. It provides a self-consistent framework for gravity and quantum mechanics, which naturally incorporates matter and gauge interactions of the type seen in the standard model. LÄS MER
2. Pierced, Wrapped and Torn : Aspects of String Theory Compactifications
Sammanfattning : An outstanding problem in physics is to find a unified framework for quantum mechanics and general relativity. This is required for a better understanding of black holes and the early cosmology of the universe. String theory provides such a unification. In this thesis, we study aspects of compactifications of type IIB string theory. LÄS MER
3. Socio-cultural viability of international intervention in war-torn societies : a case study of Bosnia Herzegovina
Sammanfattning : This dissertation explores the ‘socio-cultural dilemma’ facing international peacebuilders in war-torn societies through a case study of the post-conflict process in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is done with the help of a typological approach of the grid-group Cultural Theory framework, which defines four social solidarities – or ideal type cultures – of individualism, egalitarianism, fatalism and hierarchy. 4. An Unpredictable Past : Guerrillas, Mayas, and the Location of Oblivion in War-Torn Guatemala
Sammanfattning : The concept of resistance is analytically outdated. In an emergent anthropology of contemporary warfare and the experience of political violence, concepts like coping and negotiation are adopted to encompass the pragmatics of human agency in times of social unrest, flight, and militarily monitored mass destruction.
