  1. 16. Epigenetics in health and disease : on smoking, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis disease states

    Författare :Mikael Ringh; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis was to investigate the genome-wide DNA methylation in tissues associated with the immunopathogenesis of two autoimmune diseases, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), as well as smoking-associated methylome patterns in the lung. In Study I, we investigated the methylome of two sets of monozygotic twin pairs, representing two phases of anti citrulline protein antibody (ACPA)-positive RA disease development. LÄS MER

  2. 17. In situ characterization of immune cells mediating potential control of HIV infection in the female genital mucosa

    Författare :Anna Gibbs; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Heterosexual HIV transmission is the most common viral transmission route, worldwide, where young women are more susceptible to HIV infection than men. To establish a persistent infection the virus needs to cross the mucosal surface of the female genital tract (FGT). LÄS MER

  3. 18. Macrophages and neutrophils in tissue homeostasis and recovery from ischemic injury

    Författare :Kristel Parv; Mia Phillipson; Gustaf Christoffersson; Per-Ola Carlsson; Stephen Jenkins; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; macrophages; neutrophils; hindlimb ischemia; ischemic disease; mural cells; diabetes mellitus; postnatal β cell maturation.;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophils and macrophages have functions beyond protection against pathogens. The overall aim of the work presented in this thesis was to identify novel tasks for these innate immune cells in maintaining homeostasis. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Epidermal stem cells at the point of no return

    Författare :Karl Annusver; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The skin is our main barrier against outside harm, and it helps to maintain internal homeostasis. These functions are mostly fulfilled by the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin, formed from keratinocytes that are constantly being shed and replaced through proliferation, differentiation, and subsequent delamination of tissue resident stem cells. 5. 20. Repopulation of a microglia-depleted central nervous system : molecular characterization during homeostasis and disease

    Författare :Jinming Han; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Microglia are predominant tissue resident macrophages within the central nervous system (CNS), and contribute to both CNS development and homeostasis. During disease conditions microglia undergo transcriptional re-programming and their dysfunction is implicated in a multitude of disorders, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). LÄS MER
