1. Ultrafast spin dynamics at the nanoscale : using coherent X-ray and terahertz radiation
Sammanfattning : The field of ultrafast magnetism is driven by the growing need for faster and more efficient magnetic data storage, which comprises the vast majority of the digital information worldwide. However, after more than two decades of intense research, the understanding of the fundamental physical processes governing the transfer of angular momentum necessary for magnetic switching, is still lacking, partially hampered by the appropriate experimental tools. 2. X-ray spectroscopy on diatomic and cationic molecules
Sammanfattning : X-ray spectroscopy have been used to study the electronic structure of diatomic and cationic molecules. X-ray absorption spectra of the molecular cations N2+, O2+, and CO+ have been measured. LÄS MER
3. Non-linear Spectroscopy of Conical Intersections with XUV and X-ray Photons
Sammanfattning : Conical intersections (CIs) appear in a molecule due to the breakdown of the Born-Oppenheimer approximation when the energy difference between two or more electronic states decreases. CIs are known to play a crucial role in processes such as photosynthesis and vision in the human eye, and therefore it is important to probe the existence of such entities in molecules. LÄS MER
4. Fingerprints of light-induced molecular transients : from quantum chemical models of ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Absorption of sunlight generates renewable electricity and powers the growth of plants, but also causes severe damage both to synthetic materials and biological tissue. The wildly varying outcomes of these light-induced processes are ultimately determined by much slighter differences in their underlying reaction pathways, induced by the transient properties of short-lived and miniscule molecules; a powerful approach to their detection and characterization is offered by ultrafast x-ray spectroscopy, with identification of spectral fingerprints and further guidance from quantum chemical models. 5. Structural studies of ba3-type cytochrome c oxidase using serial crystallography and X-ray absorption spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : Cytochrome c oxidase (CcO) catalyses the reduction of molecular oxygen to water while the energy released in this process is used transport protons “up-hill” across an energy transducing biological membrane, creating a proton-motive force for ATP synthesis. Given its key role in energy transduction in organisms, proton pumping has been extensively studied across species. LÄS MER
