11. Tick-borne encephalitis : on pathogenesis and prognosis
Sammanfattning : The general aim of the five studies presented in this thesis was to investigate the clinical outcome and prognosis and factors of importance for the pathogenesis of TBE compared to other aseptic meningo-encephalitis. In a prospective study 149 patients presenting with clinical symptoms of acute viral meningo-encephalitis between June 1991 and December 1993 were included. LÄS MER
12. Epidemiological aspects of tick borne diseases with focus on risk and prevention
Sammanfattning : The incidence and variety of diseases associated with ticks have increased world-wide and ticks are currently considered to be second only to mosquitoes as vectors of human infectious diseases in the world. In the northern hemisphere, Ixodes ricinus, the most common tick, transmits diseases caused by several infectious pathogens, including different types of bacteria, virus and protozoa. LÄS MER
13. Tick-borne encephalitis : prognosis, immunization and virus strain characterization
Sammanfattning : The aims were to investigate the morbidity associated with tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) both in the acute phase and at long-term follow-up, to develop a rapid neutralization test for confirmation of TBEV-specific antibody response and to study the serological response after TBE-vaccination and, finally, to characterize Swedish human TBEV isolates. The morbidity was studied in one retrospective follow-up study of consecutive TBE-patients, treated during a 10-year period (Paper 1) and in one prospective study of TBE-patients with aseptic meningoencephalitis of non-TBE etiology as a reference group (Paper II). 14. Emerging tick-borne pathogens: on the ecology of multiple infections in ticks and reservoir hosts
Sammanfattning : Most animals will encounter several more or less severe infectious diseases during their lifetime, and simultaneous infections with more than one pathogen, or several different strains of the same pathogen, are common in natural populations. Ticks transmit a wide variety of different pathogens and can also be simultaneously infected with more than one pathogen. LÄS MER
15. The Origin of the Genus Flavivirus and the Ecology of Tick-Borne Pathogens
Sammanfattning : The present thesis examines questions related to the temporal origin of the Flavivirus genus and the ecology of tick-borne pathogens. In the first study, we date the origin and divergence time of the Flavivirus genus. It has been argued that the first flaviviruses originated after the last glacial maximum. LÄS MER
