1. Fronts and instabilities in laser ablation, organic semiconductors and quantum media
Sammanfattning : The concept of a front plays a decisive role in various elds in physics and beyond. In the present thesis we study key aspects of front dynamics and stability in the context of laser plasmas, organic semiconductors and quantum media. LÄS MER
2. Thermonuclear Instabilities and Plasma Edge Transport in Tokamaks
Sammanfattning : High-energy ions generated by fusion reactions in a burning fusion plasma may give rise to different types of wave instabilities. The present thesis investigates two types of such instabilities which recently have been observed in fusion experiments: the Toroidal Alfvén Eigenmode (TAE) instability and the magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability (MCI) which is predicted to give rise to ion cyclotron emission (ICE). 3. Model based approach to resistive wall magnetohydrodynamic instability control : Experimental modeling and optimal control for the reversed-field pinch
Sammanfattning : The primary objective of fusion research is to realize a thermonuclear fusion power plant. The main method to confine the hot plasma is by using a magnetic field. The reversed-field pinch is a type of magnetic confinement device which suffers from variety of magnetohy- drodynamic (MHD) instabilities. LÄS MER
4. Microinstabilities in Advanced Tokamak and Stellarator Geometries
Sammanfattning : The anomalous particle and heat transport observed in magnetically confined plasmas is generally attributed to plasma turbulence driven by short-scale instabilities, called microinstabilities. Understanding the stability limits of microinstabilities and their dependency on the equilibrium configuration is of paramount importance in the effort to predict the performance of future fusion devices such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). 5. Stabilisation of resistive-wall modes in fusion plasmas
Sammanfattning : For the success of thermonuclear fusion by magnetic confinement it is important to improve on the stability limits imposed by large-scale magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) instabilities. This thesis focuses on the stabilisation of the "resistive-wall mode" (RWM), an instability which affects high-pressure tokamaks but also Reversed Field Pinches (RFP). LÄS MER
