11. Chronic bone marrow failure and transfusion patterns : epidemiological studies of blood transfusions and outcomes in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes
Sammanfattning : Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) encompass a diverse group of clonal hematological malignancies characterized by dysplasia and ineffective hematopoiesis with an increased risk of leukemic evolution. It is a disease of the elderly with a median age of nearly 75 years. LÄS MER
12. Colonoscopy : Introduction and development, completion rates, complications and cancer detection
Sammanfattning : In a population-based study in the county of Södermanland, 6066 colonoscopies performed in 4304 patients from 1979 to 1995 inclusive were evaluated. As indications, bleeding increased and polyps and unclear x-ray findings decreased. Surveillance (cancer, polyps, colitis) was fairly stable. LÄS MER
13. Conformationally Constrained Nucleosides, Nucleotides and Oligonucleotides : Design, Synthesis and Properties
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on six original research publications describing synthesis, structure and physicochemical and biochemical analysis of chemically modified oligonucleotides (ONs) in terms of their potential diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Synthesis of two types of bicyclic conformationally constrained nucleosides, North-East locked 1',2'-azetidine and North locked 2',4'-aza-ENA, is described. LÄS MER
14. Oesophageal Cancer – Novel Targets for Therapy : With focus on Hsp90, EGFR, LRIG, microtubule and telomerase
Sammanfattning : Oesophageal cancer is a malignant and aggressive disease with very poor survival. The aim of this thesis was to evaluate novel therapeutic targets in oesophageal cancer. In paper I, Hsp90 was expressed in all 81 oesophageal cancer tissues and also in nine oesophageal cancer cell lines. LÄS MER
15. Procedure-related pain with focus on bone marrow aspiration in adult patients with malignancies
Sammanfattning : Pain is the most feared consequence of malignancy and an important clinical problem. Patients frequently undergo a variety of invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures which may cause pain and anxiety of varying intensity. This is a hitherto relatively unexplored area in adult patients. LÄS MER
