  1. 1. Vegetation history, human impact and palaeogeography of West Estonia : Pollen analytical studies of lake and bog sediments

    Författare :Siim Veski; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Vegetation history; human impact; palaeogeography; shoreline displacement; The Baltic Sea; the Yoldia Sea; the Ancylus Lake; the Litorina Sea; pollen analysis; macro fossil analysis; bog and lake sediments; radiocarbon dating; Holocene; Estonia; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth Sciences with Specialization Environmental Analysis; geovetenskap med inriktning mot miljöanalys;

    Sammanfattning : The history of Holocene vegetation in western Estonia and the West Estonian Archipelago is described. Early Holocene sea level changes in the area are reconstructed, and human impact on the vegetation during the Late Holocene is discussed West Estonia was divided into five study areas (Rummu-Maardu, Mustjärve, Velise-Kiilaspere, Tôstamaa Peninsula, and northern Saaremaa in the West Estonian Archipelago, from north to south). 2. 2. Event stratigraphy for the Last Glacial-Holocene transition in eastern middle Sweden

    Författare :Jonas Björck; Michael J.C Walker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Last Glacial-Holocene transition; event stratigraphy; eastern middle Sweden; pollen; plant macrofossils; marine calcareous fossils; microtephra; radiocarbon dating; clay varve chronology; GRIP; ice-core chronology; calendar year chronology; Preboreal oscillation; Yoldia Sea; Baltic Ice Lake; Quaternary Geology; kvartärgeologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis outlines an event stratigraphy for the Last Glacial-Holocene transition in eastern middle Sweden. Events are short-lived occurrences that have left traces in the geological record and which, therefore, may be used for correlation and inter-regional comparisons. LÄS MER

  3. 3. In the wake of deglaciation - sedimentary signatures of ice-sheet decay and sea-level change : Studies from south-central Sweden and the western Arctic Ocean

    Författare :Henrik Swärd; Matt O'Regan; Martin Jakobsson; Juha Pekka Lunkka; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; paleoenvironmental changes; last deglaciation; sedimentology; Lake Vättern; western Arctic Ocean; Mackenzie Trough; Herald Canyon; Marine Geology; maringeologi;

    Sammanfattning : Lacustrine and marine sedimentary archives help unravel details concerning the withdrawal of large ice sheets and resulting sea-level changes during the last deglaciation (22 -11 kyr). In a series of four manuscripts, this PhD thesis investigates the sedimentological signatures from deglacial processes at three key locations in the northern hemisphere: (i) Lake Vättern (LV) in south-central Sweden, (ii) Herald Canyon (HC) in the western Chukchi Sea, and (iii) Mackenzie Trough (MT) on the westernmost edge of the Canadian Beaufort Shelf. 4. 4. Submerged Landscapes in the Hanö Bay : Early Holocene shoreline displacement and human environments in the southern Baltic Basin

    Författare :Anton Hansson; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Submerged landscapes; Baltic Sea; Southern Sweden; Geoarchaeology; Mesolithic; Early Holocene; Environmental reconstruction; Shoreline displacement;

    Sammanfattning : During times of lower global sea level, vast areas of the coastal shelf were exposed and converted into ecologically diverse coastal landscapes that wereattractive for human occupation. The landscapes were subsequently flooded during the deglaciation, but well-preserved remains of these landscapes andtheir inhabitants can today be found on the seafloor. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Holocene environmental changes recorded by diatom stratigraphy in the southern Baltic Sea

    Författare :Elinor Andrén; Rick W. Batterbee; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; allmän och historisk geologi; General and Historical Geology;

    Sammanfattning : Sediment cores from the southern Baltic Sea and the Oder River estuary are analysed for their siliceous microfossil assemblages and organic carbon content. Long piston cores from the Bornholm and Gotland Basins provide data on the long-term Holocene history of the Baltic proper and serve as a natural background when evaluating the most recent environmental changes recorded in the short gravity cores.
