   Sammanfattning : This dissertation investigates the long historical process leading up to the establishment of Swedish forensic medicine in the middle of the 19th century. Both the development of the practice of investigating suspicious deaths, primarily through autopsies, and the scientific development, leading up to the founding of forensic medicine as a medical discipline and a distinct field of knowledge are dealt with.    Sammanfattning : This study traces the history of publishers’ cloth-bindings in Sweden, and places them in relation to the emergence of modernity. The interaction between techno-logy, economics and aesthetics is central to the analysis, in which a sociological approach is combined with per-spectives of book history and material culture studies.    Sammanfattning : The controlled injection of quantized charge excitations from single-electron emitters into nanoscopic conductors sets the basis for many important applications ranging from metrology to the emerging field of quantum optics with electrons. Successful implementation of these applications relies not only on achieving control on the precision of the particle emission, but also on the energetic properties of the injected particles.    Sammanfattning : Recent dramatic progress in the understanding of the non-perturbative structure of superstring theory shows that extended objects of various kinds, collectively referred to as p-branes, are an integral part of the theory. In this thesis, comprising an introductory text divided in two parts and seven appended research papers (Papers I-VII), we study various aspects of p-branes with relevance for superstring theory.
