1. Living in a Variable Environment : Reproductive Decisions in Wild Bird Populations
Sammanfattning : In nature, environments are often variable and heterogeneous influencing ecological and evolutionary processes. This thesis focus on how animals interact with their environment and how that affects the reproductive decisions they make. LÄS MER
2. Through the eyes of a woodpecker: Understanding habitat selection, territory quality and reproductive decisions from individual behaviour
Sammanfattning : In this thesis I present some connections between foraging behaviour and reproductive success, time budget, tree species use, and habitat selection. The thesis is based upon both theoretical and empirical work. All empirical studies concern a south Swedish population of lesser spotted woodpeckers Dendrocopos minor, studied between 1990 and 1996. 3. Spatial and temporal population dynamics in the mountain tundra – mesopredator and prey
Sammanfattning : It is well known that competition, predation and fluctuating food resources can have strong effect on individual fitness and population dynamics. The complexity of natural systems can make it complicate to disentangle those processes, but environments with relatively simple food webs, and strong cyclic population dynamics offer contrasting conditions resembling experimental treatments. 4. 'O neighbour, where art thou?' : spatial and social dynamics in wolverine and lynx, from individual space use to population distribution
Sammanfattning : The organisation of individuals in space and time influences population structure and dynamics, and is important for our understanding of animal ecology. The aim of this thesis is to gain an increased understanding of the mechanisms driving the abundance and distribution of solitary carnivores, from individual space use to population-level distribution. 5. Habitat composition and restocking for conservation of the white-backed woodpecker in Sweden
Sammanfattning : In Sweden, intense human land use, especially forestry, has led to profound changes in the landscape over time, especially within the forest ecosystems. A consequence of this is that several specialist species have become endangered. One group of specialists is the woodpeckers. LÄS MER
