1. Neutrophil Chemotaxis and Respiratory Burst in Term and Preterm Newborn Infants
Sammanfattning : Neutrophil activation is the most important initial immune defense against invading microbes in newborn infants. The reduced neutrophil migration and uncontrolled regulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production observed in neonates, could result in a diminished infectious response or in tissue damage. 2. Neurological adaptation of full-term newborn infants : Influence of intrauterine growth accleration, intrapartal asphyxia and different modes of delivery
Sammanfattning : Grace Otamiri. 1991. Neurological adaptation of full-term newborn infants. Influence of intrauterine growth acceleration, intrapartal asphyxia and different modes of delivery. LÄS MER
3. Routine procedures in the care of the full-term newborn
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents four studies on routine procedures used in the care of the full-term newborn. The overall aim of the thesis was to study the effects of these routines and endeavour to find ways to improve them.Study I, an observational study, included 28 healthy newborns, assessing pain during neonatal hip examination. 4. Premedication for intubation in newborn infants; pain assessment, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics
Sammanfattning : Preterm infants undergo intensive care during a vulnerable period with hemodynamic instability and a rapidly developing and immature CNS. Adequate pain management is essential, since pain experience might lead to acute physiological reactions as well as neurological and neuropsychological sequels. LÄS MER
5. Perinatal brain injury - markers and mediators. Non-protein-bound iron and pro-inflammatory cytokines in newborn infants and neonatal pigs
Sammanfattning : Two groups of newborn infants have an increased risk for perinatal brain injury; preterm infants and term infants subjected to birth asphyxia. Experimental studies indicate that hypoxic-ischemic insults in the perinatal period initiate a secondary neurotoxic cascade including formation of toxic reactive oxygen species as well as an inflammatory response with elevated levels of potentially neurotoxic cytokines.
