1. Improving Peripheral Vision Through Optical Correction and Stimulus Motion
Sammanfattning : The loss of central vision subsequent to macular disease is often extremely debilitating. People with central field loss (CFL) must use other peripheral areas of the retina in order to see; areas with inferior resolution capacity, which are also affected by off-axis optical errors. 2. A Study of Some Temporal Properties of the Human Visual Evoked Potential, and Their Relation to Binocular Function
Sammanfattning : As disturbed binocular functions in small children may lead to severe amblyopia it is of interest to detect it as early as possible. Most tests for binocular functions, however, demand active cooperation and may be unreliable in children up to 4-5 years of age. LÄS MER
3. Temporal Modulation in Fluorescence Spectroscopy and Imaging for Biological Applications
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the benefits of intensity modulation for the purpose of extending the range of applications of fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging in cellular and molecular biology and medicine. Long-lived transient states of fluorescent molecules can, because of their long lifetimes, be used to detect subtle changes in the microenvironment of the molecule. LÄS MER
4. Neurons against Noise : Neural adaptations for dim light vision in hawkmoths
Sammanfattning : All animals perceive the world through their senses, which form the basis for their decisions and motor actions. However, when these all-important senses reach their limit and cease to provide reliable information, the animal’s survival is threatened. LÄS MER
5. Supra-threshold hearing loss and wide dynamic range compression
Sammanfattning : Cochlear hearing loss leads to deficits in many perceptual aspects, including threshold elevation (loss of sensitivity), reduction of auditory dynamic range (loudness recruitment) and problems with resolving sounds (loss of supra-threshold hearing). An ongoing debate is whether assessment of the individual supra-threshold hearing provides information which is likely to have an important influence on clinical decisions on signal processing strategies.
