1. Spatiotemporal climate and atmospheric circulation variability in Asia inferred from tree rings
Sammanfattning : Observed 20th century warming trends accompanied by more frequent weather extremes such as droughts or intense rainfall events have consequences for societies and environments alike. In Asia, where the majority of the population depend on agricultural productivity, recent climate change is likely to increase societal hardships. LÄS MER
2. On the intra-seasonal to decadal climate variability over South-Asia
Sammanfattning : South Asia, a land of contrasting landscapes, seasons and climates, is highly vulnerable to climate variability over intra-seasonal to decadal time scales. In winter, precipitation over the western parts of south Asia and fog over the Indo-Gangetic (IG) plains are the two major climatic features. LÄS MER
3. On atmospheric low frequency variability, teleconnections and link to jet variability
Sammanfattning : The atmosphere is a complex system with an infinite number of independent variables. The best approximations of the atmosphere are made using numerical models. The use of such models provides an invaluable tool for studying the atmospheric system. LÄS MER
4. To leak or not to leak? : Land‐Use Displacement and Carbon Leakage from Forest Conservation
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the question how emissions from land‐use displacement can be assessed and accounted for, using the example of carbon‐leakage accounting in the planned UNFCCC mechanism on ‘Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation’ (REDD). REDD serves here as example of an international forest conservation policy that might be effective locally but could lead to displacement of deforestation to other countries. LÄS MER
5. Impact of climate variability on dynamic groundwater storage in mid- to high latitude countries
Sammanfattning : Climate change will alter the hydrological cycle, potentially changing dynamic groundwater storage and increasing groundwater drought risk. Climate influences groundwater storage directly via changes in groundwater recharge, but groundwater drought responsiveness further depends on groundwater system characteristics. LÄS MER
