1. The Specter of Scarcity : Experiencing and Coping with Metal Shortages, 1870-2015
Sammanfattning : In spite of an ever-growing supply of metals, actors have long feared metal shortages. This thesis – departing from an understanding that metals scarcity is not an objective geological fact, but an experience, a fear of a shortage – explores why business and state actors have experienced metals as scarce and how they coped with scarcity from 1870 to 2015. 2. Analyzing technological change in low carbon power generation
Sammanfattning : In order to mitigate climate change while satisfying the growing global electricity demand, technological change within the power generating system is crucial. New low carbon technologies need to replace the current more carbon-intensive options. LÄS MER
3. Energy Efficiency Versus Gains in Consumer Amenities
Sammanfattning : This thesis, consisting of five papers, addresses the question of what share of technological development results in increased energy efficiency rather than offsetting improved consumer services in the form of gains in consumer amenities? In the first paper economic and organizational explanations are given for stagnating energy efficiency trends in the Swedish residential building sector. The results show that changes in energy prices to a large extent explain the observed stagnation. LÄS MER
4. Motivating External Participation in Marketing Intelligence Foresight
Sammanfattning : Long-range planning for purposes of deciding on the development of high investment and long development cycle activities requires that assumptions be made about environmental factors at the time of their future completion. For organizations that serve a market, the future market factors related to supply, demand, and technological developments are at once fundamentally critical and unknowable with certainty. LÄS MER
5. Full Cycle Engine Simulations with Detailed Chemistry
Sammanfattning : The modeling work developed in this thesis can be divided in two main areas of investigations: autoignition related to spark ignition engine and combustion and emissions formation in relation to diesel engines. A first version of a detailed kinetics engine simulation program, extended to handle full cycle calculations, was employed in order to demonstrate the strong effect that nitric oxide from the residual gas has on the autoignition onset.
