21. Mine the Gaps : Evolution of Eukaryotic Protein Indels and their Application for Testing Deep Phylogeny
Sammanfattning : Insertions/deletions (indels) are potentially powerful evolutionary markers, but little is known about their evolution and few tools exist to effectively study them. To address this, I developed SeqFIRE, a tool for automated identification and extraction of indels from protein multiple sequence alignments. LÄS MER
22. Exact and approximation algorithms for graph problems with some biological applications
Sammanfattning : In this thesis we study several combinatorial problems in algorithmic graph theory and computational biology, and different algorithmical approaches for solving them. In particular, we focus on graph algorithms, seeking for the most part polynomial or sub-exponential exact solutions, but in some cases also approximate solutions. LÄS MER
23. Classification of large pollen datasets using neural networks with application to mapping and modelling pollen data
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the usage of large pollen databases and their application to mapping and modelling past vegetation. Maps of past taxon distributions are generated and classification techniques are used to compile maps of past woodland types. LÄS MER
24. Bayesian Phylogenetic Inference : Estimating Diversification Rates from Reconstructed Phylogenies
Sammanfattning : Phylogenetics is the study of the evolutionary relationship between species. Inference of phylogeny relies heavily on statistical models that have been extended and refined tremendously over the past years into very complex hierarchical models. LÄS MER
25. The morphology and evolutionary significance of the anomalocaridids
Sammanfattning : Approximately 600 to 500 million years ago, a major evolutionary radiation called the “Cambrian Explosion” gave rise to nearly all of the major animal phyla known today. This radiation is recorded by various fossil lagerstätten, such as the Burgess Shale in Canada, where soft-bodied animals are preserved in exquisite detail. LÄS MER
