1. Phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation in tadpoles
Sammanfattning : Amphibian larvae are plastic in many traits. Can plasticity buffer population divergence, so that local adaptation is more common in non-plastic traits? I argue that this may be the case for adaptive plastic responses. LÄS MER
2. Physiological and Environmental Processes Influencing Growth Strategies in Amphibian Larvae
Sammanfattning : Cost and benefits of high individual growth rates are likely to vary across different environments leading to geographic differentiation in growth strategies. In ectotherms, habitats constrained by short growing seasons favour rapid growth and development leading to adaptive latitudinal clines in these traits. LÄS MER
3. Phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation in island populations of Rana temporaria
Sammanfattning : Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of a genotype to express different phenotypes in different environments. Despite its common occurrence, few have investigated differences in plasticity between populations, the selection pressures responsible for it, and costs and constraints associated with it. LÄS MER
4. Adaptation Along Environmental Gradients: an Evaluation of Physiological Mechanisms and Ecological Constraints
Sammanfattning : For ectotherms living in seasonal environments, time available for development and growth is often constrained by the length of the growth season. Declining season length towards higher latitudes often select for latitudinal clines in development and growth rates, exhibiting increasing growth and developmental rates towards the north. LÄS MER
5. The effects of crayfish on interactions in freshwater benthic communities
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines how freshwater crayfish affect community interactions in benthic food webs. I have mainly studied the influence of the introduced signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) on littoral communities, but also the influence of the native noble crayfish (Astacus astacus). LÄS MER
