16. Aspects of physical activity in Rheumatoid Arthritis : associations with inflammation and cardiovascular risk factors
Sammanfattning : Background: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), partially attributable to systemic inflammation and traditional risk factors for CVD. Since physical activity (PA) is strongly related to CVD in the general population, the aim of this thesis was to describe aspects of PA in patients with RA, and further to analyse associations with disease activity, traditional risk factors for CVD and subclinical atherosclerosis. 17. Rac1 signaling regulates platelet-dependent inflammation abdominal sepsis
Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome to a localized or systemic infection that leads to the over production of proinflammatory cytokines and the ultimate failure of multiple organ systems. However, little is known about the potential role of Rac1 in controlling sepsis-induced intracellular signaling pathways. LÄS MER
18. Resistin is a modulator of inflammation and autoimmunity
Sammanfattning : Resistin is a protein with proinflammatory properties in man and a regulator of glucose metabolism in mice. Human resistin activates the nuclear factor kappa-B dependent cytokine cascade; however, its full role in inflammation in terms of regulation, expression, and cellular source is not entirely understood. 19. The Role of Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cells and Natural Killer Cells in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
Sammanfattning : Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibody production, which can eventually lead to immune complex (IC)-mediated organ damage. Due to the stimulation of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDC) by nucleic acid-containing ICs (DNA- or RNA-IC), patients with SLE have an ongoing interferon (IFN)-α production. LÄS MER
20. Inflammation and Cell Profileration Following Perinatal Brain Injury
Sammanfattning : Inflammation plays an important role in cerebral ischemic injury in the immature brain. The aim of the thesis was to investigate (1) the role of astrocyte activation and reactive gliosis in neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury, (2) the role of complement derived peptide C3a in neonatal HI brain injury, (3) the effect of neonatal HI brain injury on fear learning and behaviour, (4) the effects of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced systemic inflammation on cell proliferation in the developing brain.
