  1. 1. On Compositionality

    Författare :Martin Jönsson; Teoretisk filosofi; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Natural Language Semantics; Linguistic Creativity; Compositionality; Productivity; Systematicity; Jerry Fodor; Semantic Theories; Meaning; Paul Horwich; Semantic Principles; Peter Pagin;

    Sammanfattning : The goal of inquiry in this essay is to ascertain to what extent the Principle of Compositionality – the thesis that the meaning of a complex expression is determined by the meaning of its parts and its mode of composition – can be justifiably imposed as a constraint on semantic theories, and thereby provide information about what meanings are. Apart from the introduction (Chapter One) and the concluding chapter (Chapter Seven) the thesis is divided into five chapters addressing different questions pertaining to the overarching goal of inquiry. 2. 2. Grammatical correctness and communicative ability : a performance analysis of the written and spoken English of Swedish learners

    Författare :Inger Bergström; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; grammatical correctness; communicative ability; performance analysis; written and spoken English; classroom instruction; low-achievers; language learning; interlanguage; compensatory strategies; errors; verb phrase; parameters; systematicity; variability; writing proficiency; speech proficiency; elicitation test;

    Sammanfattning : Written and oral material produced by a group of low-achieving learners of English from the 2-year lines of the Swedish upper secondary school was analysed from the perspective of grammatical correctness and communicative ability. The grammatical analysis focussed on the verb phrase and tests included both free production in speech and writing and elicitation tests. LÄS MER

  3. 3. An Encounter with Convolutional Codes over Rings

    Författare :Emma Wittenmark; Institutionen för elektro- och informationsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Telekommunikationsteknik; Data- och systemvetenskap; Telecommunication engineering; computer technology; direct sum decomposition of a ring; Systems engineering; minimal trellis; generator matrix properties; code properties; convolutional codes; codes over rings;

    Sammanfattning : Convolutional codes is one possibility when there is a need for error-correcting codes in communication systems. Using convolutional codes over rings is a relatively new approach. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Cognitive epistemology : Knowledge as a natural phenomenon

    Författare :Andreas Stephens; Teoretisk filosofi; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; knowledge; cognitive epistemology; naturalistic epistemology; cognitive psychology; evolutionary systems theory;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the question ‘What is knowledge?’ In intuition-based epistemology the question is often considered to concern how ‘knowledge’ is used linguistically or conceptually rather than what knowledge is. In addition, since intuitions are used as evidence despite empirical experiments indicating that people’s intuitions vary a great deal and that little conclusive systematicity can be found, it is argued that approaches with such a focus cannot provide a solid foundation to answer the initial question. 5. 5. Les débutants parlent-ils à l'infinitif? : Influence de l'input sur la production des verbes par des apprenants adultes du français

    Författare :Anita Thomas; Franska; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; experimental; corpus; present tense; infinitive; morphology; input; lexical aspect; frequency; beginners; morphological variation; French; L2; elicited imitation; recall; usage-based; acquisition; Bybee;

    Sammanfattning : This dissertation deals with the characteristic variation found in adult French L2 oral production. In their production of regular verbs, beginners use a short form, like parle, and a long form, like parlE, in contexts of both the present (je parl/*je parlE) and the infinitive (je veux parlE/*je veux parl).
