21. Evolutionary ecology of ultraviolet-B radiation stress tolerance in amphibians
Sammanfattning : During the last decades many amphibian species and populations have experienced declines and extinctions in different parts of the world. Anthropogenic activities are believed to account for these declines, and one of the hypothesized causes has been the increased level of ultraviolet-B (UV-B) radiation due to depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer. 22. Environmentally relevant chemical disruptors of oxidative phosphorylation in Baltic Sea biota : Exposure and toxic potentials
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on toxicity and occurrence of hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (OH-PBDEs) in Baltic Sea biota. The aims were to assess OH-PBDEs potency for disruption of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and determine their and related compounds exposure in Baltic blue mussel, herring and long-tailed duck. 23. Risk factors for cardiovascular events and incident hospital-treated diabetes in the population
Sammanfattning : Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Well-established risk factors for CVD include increasing age, male sex, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, smoking, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia and low socio-economic status. Traditional risk factors do, however, not fully explain cardiovascular risk in general. LÄS MER
24. Adrenergic regulation of proliferation and differentiation in brown adipose tissue
Sammanfattning : Brown adipose tissue constitutes an interesting model for studies of cell proliferation and cellular differentiation. Cold exposure of an animal induces recruitment of the tissue; this is accompanied by a marked increase in the mitogenic activity within the tissue and an increased expression of the genes coding for lipoprotein lipase and the uncoupling protein thermogenin. 25. Sinomenine as a novel analgesic : mechanisms and applications
Sammanfattning : Chronic pain of various origins is a major health care issue affecting a large patient population, also bring significant social and economic cost on the society. Work presented in this thesis concerns novel methods of treatments for chronic pain using experimental models. LÄS MER
