1. 3D visualization of vascular lesions and the role of versican in pulmonary arterial hypertension
Sammanfattning : Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a condition that leads to lethal right heart failure. Available treatments provide relief but are far from curative and the vascular remodeling in PAH has been difficult to decipher. LÄS MER
2. The Human Vestibular Aqueduct, Endolymphatic Duct and Sac : A Morphological Study Using Micro-CT, Super Resolution Immunohistochemistry and Synchrotron Phase Contrast Imaging
Sammanfattning : The inner ear lies sheltered in the temporal bone and consists of basically three parts: the cochlea (the hearing organ), the vestibular (the balance organ), and the endolymphatic duct (ED) and endolymphatic sac (ES). The ES and ED are located in a bony canal, the vestibular aqueduct (VA), located on the medial side of the vestibule. LÄS MER
3. X-ray and neutron μCT of biomedical samples: from image acquisition to quantification
Sammanfattning : Even though the validity of x-ray computed tomography in the analysis of biomedical samples is nowadays undisputed, the more recent imaging techniques and more advanced instruments (such as synchrotrons) are still relatively unknown to many medical doctors that could benefit from them. The doctoral work presented in this thesis joins a collective effort from the imaging community to demonstrate potential applications of advanced x-ray and neutron imaging methods to preclinical medical research, with the hope of contributing to reach a “critical mass” in the medical community and in the public opinion as well. 4. Imaging of tissue degeneration in knee osteoarthritis using magnetic resonance and synchrotron radiation
Sammanfattning : Osteoarthritis (OA) is a very common disease, especially in the knee. It is characterized by the breakdown of articular cartilage but involves all parts of the joint. OA is usually diagnosed at a late stage when the articular cartilage has begun to disappear. What happens before these macroscopic alterations is to alarge extent unknown. LÄS MER
5. Virtual histology by laboratory x-ray phase-contrast tomography
Sammanfattning : Detailed imaging of biological samples is central to different fields of research, as well as for clinical pathology. Classical histology, using light- orelectron microscopy, can generate high-resolution images but is destructive and only gives two-dimensional information. LÄS MER
