1. Computerised Microtomography : Non-invasive imaging and analysis of biological samples, with special reference to monitoring development of osteoporosis in small animals
Sammanfattning : The use of Computerised microtomography (CμT) in biomedical research is well established, with most applications developed at synchrotron facilities. The possibility to non-invasively monitor morphological changes in biological samples, makes it an attractive technique in biomedicine. LÄS MER
2. Who ate whom? Paleoecology revealed through synchrotron microtomography of coprolites (fossil feces)
Sammanfattning : Fossil droppings, known as coprolites, are being increasingly recognized as a valuable source of paleoecological information with special regard to diets, parasitism, and physiology of extinct taxa. Here, it is suggested that the excellent preservation and amount of inclusions in the coprolites (e.g. LÄS MER
3. Novel approaches to the environments and ecosystems of the fish-tetrapod transition
Sammanfattning : The fish-tetrapod transition is one of the most important evolutionary events in Earth’s history, giving rise to terrestrial vertebrates around 390 million years ago. It set the stage for a series of evolutionary events that ultimately resulted in modern-day terrestrial vertebrates including ourselves. LÄS MER
4. The Origin of Tooth Replacement : Three-dimensional Synchrotron Histology Visualizes the Dental Development of Silurian Stem Osteichthyans
Sammanfattning : Mechanisms of tooth replacement distribute incongruently among extant gnathostomes (jawed vertebrates): a permanent tooth-generating dental lamina exists in chondrichthyans (cartilaginous fish) and tetrapods but not teleosts, whereas tooth shedding by basal hard tissue resorption occurs in tetrapods and teleosts but not chondrichthyans. Theories about the evolution of tooth development have been biased towards the chondrichthyan conveyor-belt replacement, since there has been no fossil evidence for the origin of osteichthyan (bony fish and tetrapods) tooth replacement until now. 5. X-ray microtomography and digital volume correlation for internal deformation and strain analysis
Sammanfattning : A material that is exposed to mechanical load or experience a variation in its immediate environment (temperature, pressure, humidity etc.) will to some extent be affected by these new conditions, which is reflected through structural movements in the material. LÄS MER
