11. The actinorhizal plant Datisca glomerata : interpreting its symbiotic adaptations by omics-based comparisons with model and non-model organisms
Sammanfattning : Nitrogen is the element that most often limits plant growth and development. Common agricultural practices rely on the application of large quantities of industrially-produced nitrogen fertilizer, which poses a worldwide environmental threat. Sustainable agriculture encourages the use of biologically fixed nitrogen. LÄS MER
12. Conservation of transcription factors in infected cells of nitrogen-fixing root nodules
Sammanfattning : Infected cells of nitrogen-fixing root nodules are the only plant cells that can stably internally accommodate a eubacterial symbiont. In the context of studying the differentiation of infected cells, we set about to analyse the conservation of infected cell-specific transcription factors using altogether four different promoters from genes showing infected cell-specific expression, or nodule-specific expression. 13. Structure-function studies of GH7 cellulases, key enzymes in the global carbon cycle
Sammanfattning : Enzyme mixtures used for lignocellulosic ethanol production are most commonly derived from filamentous fungi, and enzymes from the glycoside hydrolase family 7 (GH7) constitute the most abundant components in these cocktails. In this thesis I have aimed to increase our understanding of this enzyme family, with focus on the interrelation between their structure and function. LÄS MER
14. Control of reactive oxygen species homeostasis in response to environmental stress
Sammanfattning : Plants are exposed to various fluctuations in their environmental conditions - light intensity, temperature, water status - and have to adapt in order to survive. Plant acclimatory responses can include the formation of new tissues, e.g., aerenchyma, or the activation of defense systems, e. LÄS MER
15. Genomic and transcriptomic investigation of reproductive incompatibility in Drosophila
Sammanfattning : Both nuclear and cytoplasmic elements can contribute to the emergence of reproductive incompatibilities that influence evolution and speciation. In the projects that compose this thesis, we use genomics and transcriptomics to study some of those elements in Drosophila. LÄS MER
