11. Susceptibility gene mapping in multiple sclerosis
Sammanfattning : Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by relapsing or progressive demyelination of the central nervous system (CNS). Increasing evidence supports that genetic factors confer susceptibility to MS resulting in an unknown mode of inheritance as a complex trait. LÄS MER
12. Genetic analysis of autoimmune diseases using animal models : Mapping susceptibility genes for multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis
Sammanfattning : Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis are common human diseasesaffecting 1% and 0.1% of the population respectively. These diseases are characterized by abnormal self-tolerance in the immune system and autoimmune reactions. LÄS MER
13. Genetic factors influencing susceptibility to intracellular infections
Sammanfattning : Genetics of susceptibility to infection is a complex trait in which many factors from the host, the parasite and the environment, interact to produce different clinical manifestations of disease. This thesis explores the relationship between the first infectious susceptibility gene ever cloned, SLC11A1 and the occurrence of intracellular infections (leprosy, leishmaniasis and HIV infection) in several populations of humans. 14. Identification and characterization of DNA sequence variants associated with multiple myeloma
Sammanfattning : Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most common hematologic malignancy. The disease is characterized by an uncontrolled growth of malignant plasma cells in the bone marrow, producing a monoclonal immunoglobulin (“M protein”) that can be detected in peripheral blood. LÄS MER
15. Genetic Loci Contributing to Spontaneous Autoimmune Diabetes
Sammanfattning : Background and Aims: Spontaneous type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the BioBreeding (BB) rat mimics human T1D as the rats experience weight loss, polydipsia, polyuria, ketoacidosis, onset during puberty and insulin-dependency within a day after diagnosis. Because the DP rat develops T1D spontaneously, it is a prime laboratory animal for dissecting the genetics of T1D susceptibility without the need for external manipulation. LÄS MER
