6. Metal Particles – Hazard or Risk? Elaboration and Implementation of a Research Strategy from a Surface and Corrosion Perspective
Sammanfattning : Do metal particles (including particles of pure metals, alloys, metal oxides and compounds) pose a hazard or risk to human health? In the light of this question, this thesis summarizes results from research conducted on metal particles, and describes the elaboration and implementation of an in vitro test methodology to study metal release from particles through corrosion and dissolution processes in synthetic biological media relevant for human exposure through inhalation/ingestion and dermal contact. Bioaccessible metals are defined as the pool of released metals from particles that potentially could be made available for absorption by humans or other organisms. LÄS MER
7. Aqueous Processing of WC-Co Powders Aqueous processing of WC-Co powders
Sammanfattning : The object of this work is toobtain a fundamental understanding of the principal issuesconcerning the handling of WC-Co powders, in an aqueousmedium. The oxidation and dissolution oftungsten carbide powder dispersed in water was investigatedusing X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and leachingstudies. 8. Computed Tomography of Acetabular Cup Wear and Effect of Surface Roughness on Wear and Oxidation of UHMWPE Hip Prostheses
Sammanfattning : Aseptic loosening is the most common complication in total hip replacement (5- 10% at 10 years follow up). The magnitude of the problem is illustrated by the fact that about one million hip prostheses are implanted worldwide each year. LÄS MER
9. Surface reactivity of metal nanoparticles : - importance of surface active agents and biomolecules from a transformation, mobility and toxicity perspective
Sammanfattning : Metallic nanoparticles possess unique properties due to their size and are widely used in e.g. consumer products. From this follows a need to identify and assess potential risks of human and environmental exposure. LÄS MER
10. Coordination Chemistry of Monocarboxylate and Aminocarboxylate Complexes at the Water/Goethite Interface
Sammanfattning : This thesis is a summary of five papers with focus on adsorption processes of various monocarboxylates and aminocarboxylates at the water/goethite interface. Interaction of organic acids at the water/mineral interfaces are of importance in biogeochemical processes, since such processes have potential to alter mobility and bioavailability of the acids and metal ions.
