  1. 1. Marine biogenic polysaccharides as a potential source of aerosol in the high Arctic : Towards a link between marine biology and cloud formation

    Författare :Qiuju Gao; Caroline Leck; Ulrika Nilsson; Eric Saltzman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Polysaccharides; Biogenic polymer microgels; Arctic Ocean; LC MS MS; Surface microlayer; Marine aerosol particles; Remote marine cloud condensation nuclei; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Sammanfattning : Primary marine aerosol particles containing biogenic polymer microgels play a potential role for cloud formation in the pristine high Arctic summer. One of the major sources of the polymer gels in Arctic aerosol was suggested to be the surface water and more specifically, the surface microlayer (SML) of the open leads within the perennial sea ice as a result of bubble bursting at the air-sea interface. 2. 2. Pool Boiling on Structured Surfaces: Heat Transfer and Critical Heat Flux : Experiments and Mechanistic Modelling

    Författare :Zhen Cao; NanoLund: Centre for Nanoscience; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; pool boiling; heat transfer; critical heat flux; bubble dynamics; surface modification;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis, pool boiling heat transfer was experimentally studied on structured surfaces with dielectric liquids (HFE-7200, NOVEC-649, FC-72), organic liquids (Acetone, Pentane) and deionized water.In the first step, nanoparticle coatings on copper surfaces were prepared by an electrophoretic deposition method, with Cu-Zn nanoparticles (100 nm) and Cu nanoparticles (150 nm). 3. 3. Development of GC-HRMS procedures for determination of naturally occuring polar compounds in various environmental applications

    Författare :Bodil Widell; Dag Broman; Caroline Leck; Joan Grimalt; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :GC-HRMS; steroid hormones; amino acids; perch; size-resolved aerosol; Arctic; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : The overall objectives of this dissertation were to gain further understanding of the two following environmentally significant issues: (i) Determination of natural steroid hormones in blood plasma from perch (Perca fluviatilis) during a reproductive cycle and to evaluate the possibility of using the steroid composition as a biomarker for early signs of endocrine disruptive effects. (ii) Determination of dissolved free amino acids in size resolved airborne particles collected over the Arctic pack ice area (>80°N) in summer and to study their overall relationship with the ocean surface microlayer as a potential source. 4. 4. An Experimental Study on Micro-Hydrodynamics of Evaporating/Boiling Liquid Film

    Författare :Shengjie Gong; Ma Weimin; Horst-Michael Prasser; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :liquid film; critical thickness; boiling; critical heat flux; rupture; dry spot; confocal optical sensor; SRA - Energy; SRA - Energi;

    Sammanfattning : Study of liquid film dynamics is of significant importance to the understanding and control of various industrial processes that involve spray cooling (condensation), heating (boiling), coating, cleaning and lubrication. For instance, the critical heat flux (CHF) of boiling heat transfer is one of the key parameters ensuring the efficiency and safety of nuclear power plants under both operational and accident conditions, which occurs as the liquid layers (microlayer and macrolayer) near the heater wall lose their integrity. 5. 5. Enrichment of biogenic and anthropogenic organic substances on sea spray aerosols

    Författare :Nikola Radoman; Ian Cousins; Matthew Salter; Jurgita Ovadnevaite; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sea spray; Organic carbon; Dissolved organic matter; Phytoplankton bloom; Cationic surfactants; Perfluorinated alkyl acids; LC-MS; HRMS; Analytical Chemistry; analytisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The world’s oceans are the source of one of the most abundant types of natural aerosols, namely sea spray aerosols (SSA). By scattering solar radiation, SSA play a significant role in controlling the Earth’s radiation budget, while they are also involved in the formation of clouds, acting as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN).
