  1. 1. On the Adhesion Between Substrates Covered with Polyelectrolyte Multilayers

    Författare :Rikard Lingström; Lars Wågberg; Lennart Piculell; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; fibre; polyelectorlyte; multilayer; wettability; contact angle; paper strength; atomic force microscopy; surface force apparatus; Cellulose and paper engineering; Cellulosa- och pappersteknik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the formation of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers (PEM) on cellulose fibres as a new way of influencing the fibre surface and the adhesion between wood fibres. The aim of the study was to enhance the fundamental understanding of the adsorption mechanisms behind the formation of Polyelectrolyte Multilayers on cellulose fibres; to study how the properties of the layers can be influenced and to show how the properties of the layers influence the adhesion between the fibres and the strength of paper sheets made from the PEM treated fibres. 2. 2. Studies of surfactant behaviour and model surfaces relevant to flotation deinking

    Författare :Katarina Theander; Mark Rutland; Krister Holmberg; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : The objective of this work was to investigate the behaviour of some model surfactants used in the deinking process, namely, sodium oleate and two ethoxylated nonionic surfactants (C12E6 and C14E6) as well as to investigate the suitability of various model substrates for mimicking interactions in technical systems. The influence of the adsorption to the air water interface has been measured by means of equilibrium and dynamic surface tension measurements, as well as foaming experiments. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Poly(Ethylene Oxide) Based Bottle-Brush Polymers and their Interaction with the Anionic Surfactant Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate : Solution and Interfacial Properties

    Författare :Joseph Iruthayaraj; Per M. Claesson; Regine v. Klitzing; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; PEO brush polymers; brush polymers; PEO; poly ethylene oxide ; polymer-surfactant; sodium dodecyl sulphate SDS ; Ellipsomtery; PEO-SDS interactions; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis work is to study the physico-chemical properties of poly(ethylene oxide), PEO, based brush polymers both in solution and at solid/aqueous interfaces. The importance of studying the surface properties of brush polymers can be related to a broad spectrum of interfacial-related applications such as colloidal stability, lubrication, detergency, protein repellency to name a few. Sammanfattning : It is widely known that surfaces play an important role in numerous biological processes and technological applications. Thus, being able to modify surface properties provides an opportunity to control many phenomena occurring at interfaces. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Fundamental Aspects on the Re-use of Wood Based Fibres : Porous Structure of Fibres and Ink Detachment

    Författare :Jennie Forsström; Lars Wågberg; Krrister Holmberg; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Environmental technology; Miljöteknik; Environmental engineering; Miljöteknik;

    Sammanfattning : In this work, different aspects on the re-use of wood based fibres have been studied, focusing on ink detachment of flexographic ink from model cellulose surfaces and changes in porous structure of kraft fibres following different treatments. New model systems for evaluation of ink detachment and ink-cellulose interactions were used. LÄS MER
