1. Type Ia Supernova Cosmology : Quantitative Spectral Analysis
Sammanfattning : Type Ia supernovae have been successfully used as standardized candles to study the expansion history of the Universe. In the past few years, these studies led to the exciting result of an accelerated expansion caused by the repelling action of some sort of dark energy. LÄS MER
2. Spectral Properties of Type Ia Supernovae and Implications for Cosmology
Sammanfattning : Type Ia supernovae can, for a short period of time, reach the same brightness as an entire galaxy. They are responsible for the creation of a large fraction of all heavy elements and can be used, as standard candles, to prove that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Yet, we do not fully understand them. LÄS MER
3. Observations of distant supernovae and cosmological implications
Sammanfattning : Type Ia supernovae can be used as distance indicators for probing the expansion history of the Universe. The method has proved to be an efficient tool in cosmology and played a decisive role in the discovery of a yet unknown energy form, dark energy, that drives the accelerated expansion of the Universe. 4. Distant supernovae and galaxies in the Stockholm VIMOS Supernova Survey
Sammanfattning : Multi colour imaging surveys help astronomers to find galaxies and clusters, and to gain insights on their physical properties and evolution. In this thesis, I present the Stockholm VIMOS Supernova Survey (SVISS), where the ELAIS-S field was observed with VIMOS UBVRI broad-band optical bands over a period of 5 years. LÄS MER
5. Tests for systematic effects in supernova cosmology
Sammanfattning : Type~Ia supernovae are used as standard candles to measure the energy density components of the universe. This led to the new paradigm in cosmology: only about 30\% of the universe is made by ordinary pressure-less matter, the rest is associated with an unknown form of energy with a negative equation of state parameter, called dark energy, able to drive the accelaration of the universe.
