16. Superantigens in group A streptococcus : gene diversity and humoral immune response
Sammanfattning : Group A streptococcus (GAS) is a strictly human pathogen that causes infections ranging from asymptomatic carriage to the highly lethal streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). GAS are classified according to the sequence of the variable 5’ end of the emm-gene that encodes the surface associated M-protein. LÄS MER
17. New actors in adipocyte function -Focusing on PDEs, CART and superantigen
Sammanfattning : Obesity is increasing rapidly in all parts of the world and is now considered to be a global epidemic. Obesity is a major risk factor for several health issues such as type 2 diabetes (T2D) and cardiovascular disease. LÄS MER
18. Activation of murine cytotoxic cells with interelukin-2 and the bacterial superantigen staphylococcal entertoxin A
Sammanfattning : Natural killer (NK) cells and T lymphocytes are the major effector cells that can recognize and kill tumor cells. NK cells have a constitutive cytotoxic activity and kill a wide spectrum of tumor cells while T cells recognize specific tumor antigens and need to be activated through their TCR to differentiate into cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) killers or T helper cells. 19. Regulatory mechanisms controlling T cell activity
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based on work studying the immunoregulatory mechanisms that govern the balance between activation and inactivation of T lymphocytes. Most of the work has been carried out in an experimental system using a T cell receptor (TCR-Vb3) transgenic mouse strain to obtain a homogenous T-cell population and utilizing the properties of bacterial superantigens to induce T cell responses and unresponsiveness in vivo. 20. Effects of mercury and fluoride on human immune cells : elucidation of mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Mercury, from dental amalgam, and fluoride, administered to prevent dental caries, have been argued to cause adverse health effects. The aims of this thesis have been to examine in what manner the fluoride and mercuric ions interact with human immune cells and, in the case of mercury, if it would be possible to monitor a tentative in vivo effect by in vitro assays.
