  1. 11. Quantifying Phagocytosis – studies on the antibody response during invasive streptococcal infections

    Författare :Therese de Neergaard; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Phagocytosis; Hill equation; Streptococcus pyogenes GAS ; Streptococcus dysgalactiae; Antibodies; invasive infection; Phagocytosis; Hill equation; Streptococcus pyogenes; Group A Streptococcus; Streptococcus dysgalactiae; Antibodies; Invasive infection;

    Sammanfattning : The interaction between our immune system and pathogens encompasses a complex spectrum from symbiosis to potentially life-threatening diseases. Throughout evolution, our immune system has evolved numerous strategies such as phagocytosis to combat infections and protect us from diseases. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Streptococcal virulence and the coagulation system

    Författare :Kristofer Wollein Waldetoft; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Streptococci; virulence; coagulation; intrinsic pathway; evolution;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis explores streptococcal virulence from both mechanistic and evolutionary perspectives, where the mechanistic studies focus on interactions with the human coagulation system. We describe interactions between streptococcal surface proteins and components of the intrinsic pathway of coagulation and the kallikrein-kinin system in human plasma, as well as to how these surface proteins are produced in different growth phases. 3. 13. The streptococcal IgG degrading enzyme IdeS : studies on host-pathogen interactions

    Författare :Jenny Johansson Söderberg; Ulrich von Pawel-Rammingen; Jan Ingemar Flock; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; streptococcus pyogenes; IdeS; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Sammanfattning : The important human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes causes both mild infections such as pharyngitis and impetigo but also severe life threatening invasive infections.  Specific antibodies (IgG) recognize pathogens and are important mediators for pathogen clearance by the immune defence. 4. 14. Periprosthetic Joint Infections. Clinical and Epidemiological Aspects

    Författare :Olof Thompson; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; prosthetic joint infection; arthroplasty; Streptococcus; Enterococcus; register; mortality;

    Sammanfattning : Periprostheteic joint infection (PJI) is a rare complication of arthroplasty with severe consequences for the affected patients. PJI most often necessitates additional surgery and prolonged courses of antibiotic treatment, leading to worse functional results and increased societal costs. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Invasive group A streptococcal infection : host and pathogen interactions

    Författare :Björn K G Eriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Group A streptococci; invasive infections; erysipelas; Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome STSS ; epidemiology; M1 serotype streptococcal pyrogenic exotoxins Spe ; SpeA; toxin neutralization; opsonization;

    Sammanfattning : Invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) infections were studied in 229 patients with a clinical diagnosis of erysipelas and 151 patients with GAS bacteremia, respectively. Beta-hemolytic streptococci were identified in about a third of the erysipelas patients, mostly group A, whereas group G streptococci were identified in about half as many episodes. LÄS MER
