1. Evolution of streamlined genomes in ultra-small aquatic bacteria
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the evolutionary processes of streamlined genomes from aquatic bacteria adapting to different salinities, using two groups of ultra-small aquatic bacteria (LD12 Alphaproteobacteria and acI Actinobacteria). Due to difficulties in obtaining pure cultures of these bacteria, culture-free approaches (single-cell genomics and metagenomics) were used to construct and compare genomes, and to study the mechanisms and selective forces of adaptation to freshwater, brackish, and marine ecosystems. 2. Exposing the Dark Microbial Biosphere
Sammanfattning : Dark biosphere research has been widely neglected, although by volume this biome comprises the lion’s share of habitats on our planet. In these systems the main metabolic strategies are of chemotrophic nature, leading to gradual depletion of redox gradients essential for sustaining life. LÄS MER
3. From Tissue to Mutations : Genetic Profiling of Colorectal Cancer
Sammanfattning : Comprehensive characterisation of the mutational landscapes of solid tumours is a multistep process involving the collection of suitable samples, the extraction of nucleic acids and the preparation of these materials for mutational analyses. In this thesis, I aimed to develop a streamlined process for the analysis of colorectal cancer (CRC) patient samples in order to identify novel mutations that hallmark the development of advanced disease. 4. Systems enabling antibody-mediated proteomics research
Sammanfattning : As many genome sequencing efforts today are completed, we are now provided with the genetic maps for several organisms, including man. With these maps at hand, the scientific focus is now shifting towards investigations of the functionality of proteins. LÄS MER
5. Carbon metabolism in non-conventional yeasts: biodiversity, origins of aerobic fermentation and industrial applications
Sammanfattning : Abstract: For millennia, the “yeast” Saccharomyces cerevisiae remains by far the most extensively studied and exploited yeast in food and industrial applications. A number of researches and developments have been done since the establishment of the biochemical function of yeast by Louis Pasteur in 1860, however modern lifestyles often connected to food related health trends demand new and innovative food products.
