1. Experimental study of turbulent flows through pipe bends
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with turbulent flows in 90 degree curved pipes of circular cross-section. The flow cases investigated experimentally are turbulent flow with and without an additional motion, swirling or pulsating, superposed on the primary flow. LÄS MER
2. Spatial Decompositions of a Fully-developed Turbulent Round Jet Sampled with Particle Image Velocimetry
Sammanfattning : Spatial decompositions of the turbulence in a far, axisymmetric jet at exit Reynolds number of 20, 000 have been performed. Equilibrium similaritytheory applied to the two-point Reynolds stresses has shown that the turbulence statistics in the far, fully developed region of an axisymmetric jet should be independent of origin in the streamwise direction when evaluated on the similarity coordinates system. 3. Vortices in turbulent curved pipe flow-rocking, rolling and pulsating motions
Sammanfattning : This thesis is motivated by the necessity to understand the flow structure of turbulent flows in bends encountered in many technical applications such as heat exchangers, nuclear reactors and internal combustion engines. Flows in bends are characterised by strong secondary motions in terms of counter-rotating vortices (Dean cells) set up by a centrifugal instability. LÄS MER
4. Experimental Studies of Complex Flows through Image-Based Techniques
Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the development of experimental techniques for the study of complex flows inspired to a large extent by the papermaking process. In particular one part of this thesis is devoted to the development of laboratory experiments based on index-of-refraction matching and imaging techniques to study the behavior of dilute and concentrated suspension of elongated particles. 5. Experimental and computational studies of turbulent separating internal flows
Sammanfattning : The separating turbulent flow in a plane asymmetric diffuser with 8.5 degrees opening angle is investigated experimentally and computationally. The considered flow case is suitable for fundamental studies of separation, separation control and turbulence modelling. LÄS MER
