21. Studies of Material Properties using Ab Initio and Classical Molecular Dynamics
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, material properties have been examined under extreme conditions in computer-based calculations. The research on iron (Fe), nickel (Ni), and ferropericlase (Mg1-xFexO) are not only important for our understanding of the Earth, but also for an improved knowledge of these materials per se. 22. Molecular Structure and Packing of Platinum(II) Complexes with S-donor Ligands in the Solid State An X-ray Crystallographic Study
Sammanfattning : How do molecules arrange themselves in a crystal? It is today not possible to definite predict the three-dimensional packing arrangement of molecules in the crystalline solid state. The aim of the work presented in this thesis has been to gain more knowledge of what principles that govern molecular packing. LÄS MER
23. From Static Structures to Free Energy Landscapes: Characterizing Conformational Transitions in Biological Macromolecules
Sammanfattning : To be alive means to temporarily counteract the fundamental dispersive driving force described by the second law of thermodynamics, eventually leading all systems to decay and disorder. In cells, this task is partly carried out by proteins - small specialized molecular machines that utilize free energy to maintain the proper functioning of the cell. LÄS MER
24. Nanocalorimetry of electronic phase transitions in systems with unconventional superconductivity and magnetic ordering
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, low temperature specific heat measurements on small (μg) single crystals of different superconducting and magnetic systems are presented. The device used in this work features a combination of high sensitivity and good accuracy over the temperature range 1-400 K and allows measurements in high magnetic fields. LÄS MER
25. Structural transitions of proton-gated ion channels : Involving pH sensing, heterogeneity and lipid interactions
Sammanfattning : Studying protein structure and function involves analyzing the relationship between a protein's three-dimensional assembly and its dynamic biochemical activity. The superfamily of pentameric ligand-gated ion channels (pLGICs) constitutes a classic yet illuminating experimental system for structure-function studies. LÄS MER
