1. Red algal starch metabolism : effects of endosymbionts and nutrient status on starch metabolising enzymes
Sammanfattning : Many different organisms occur as endosymbionts of red algae and while some are highly pathogenic others have little effect on the host. An endosymbiotic fungus, found in our culture of Gracilariopsis sp., was characterised and identified as a Chytridiomycete. It was named Thalassochytrium gracilariopsidis and probably belongs to a new order. LÄS MER
2. Development of Transgenic Potatoes to Attain Novel Starch Qualities
Sammanfattning : Starch is a plant-derived polysaccharide with many uses in different food and non-food applications. In this thesis, the production of two novel potato starch qualities, amylopectin and high-amylose, and the modifications and the characteristics of the produced plants and starches are described. 3. Process Development of Bioethanol Production from Wheat and Barley Residues Steam Pretreatment and SSF
Sammanfattning : Bioethanol has received increasing attention as an alternative to petrol due to the current dependency on supplies from other countries and due to the increased concentration of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In this thesis, the development of 2nd generation production processes for bioethanol production from the lignocellulosic part of biomass is discussed. LÄS MER
4. Plastidial phosphate transport in plants
Sammanfattning : Phosphorus is an essential element for all living organisms and is central to the genetics and energetics of life. Inorganic phosphate (Pi) is recurrently involved in protein regulation and signal transduction but also in energy transfer as a component of the ATP-molecule. LÄS MER
5. Role of mycorrhiza symbiosis and phosphorus nutrition in plant growth, photosynthesis and secondary metabolism
Sammanfattning : Inorganic phosphorus (Pi) is an important and often limiting nutrient for plants. Large amounts of Pi fertilizers derived from non-renewable rock phosphorus, are used in agriculture. These are applied in excess but crops take up only a small amount of Pi; the residual Pi ends up in water systems where it causes problems with eutrophication. LÄS MER
