  1. 16. Pathogenesis of infections related to foreign devices within the cerebral ventricles

    Författare :Fredrik Lundberg; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; bacteriology; Microbiology; CSF-shunt; complement activation; vitronectin; hydrocephalus; coagulase-negative staphylococci; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Coagulase-negative staphyloccoci (CoNS) are the most frequently isolated micro-organisms from infected cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunts and temporary ventricular drainage catheters, used in modern neurosurgery. CoNS originate from the skinflora of the patient or the surgeon and gain access to the surface of the implant at the insertion, but the infection can erupt up to a year later or more. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Studies on two bacterial resistance mechanisms to β-lactam antibiotics : extended spectrum β-lactamases in Klebsiella oxytoca and methicillin resistance in staphylococci

    Författare :Shang Wei Wu; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Eleven clinical isolates of Klebsiella oxytoca from Stockholm hospitals were found to be resistant to aztreonam and cefuroxime (MIC > 16 mg/L). The resistance was caused by a ß-lactamase with pI 5.25 and designated KH. Assay of the substrate profiles revealed that the KH ß-lactarnase was similar to the chromosomally encoded OXY-2 ß-lactamase. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Postoperative mediastinitis : risk factors, wound contamination, diagnostic possibilities

    Författare :Catarina Yael Bitkover; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :postoperative mediastinitis; risk factors; coaglase-negative staphylococci; pulsed field gel electrophoresis; computed tomography; granulocyte scintigraphy; inflammation; postoperative infection; procalcitonin; sternotomy; heart surgery;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of these studies has been to investigate different aspects of postoperative mediastinitis. Radiological investigations and biochemical markers of infection and inflammation were examined, risk factors analyzed and spread of bacteria during operation studied. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Staphylococcal prosthetic joint infections : similar, but still different

    Författare :Staffan Tevell; Bo Söderquist; Åsa Nilsdotter-Augustinsson; Annelies Zinkernagel; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prosthetic joint infections; staphylococcal infections; nasal carriage; Staphylococcus aureus; Staphylococcus epidermidis; Staphylococcus capitis; NRCS-A; antibiotic resistance; heterogeneous glycopeptide resistance; whole-genome sequencing; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Sammanfattning : Staphylococci constitute a major part of our commensal flora but are also the most common bacteria causing prosthetic joint infections (PJIs), a dreaded complication of arthroplasty surgery. However, not all staphylococci are the same. LÄS MER

  5. 20. Cytokines in Staphylococcus aureus arthritis. For better for worse

    Författare :Olof H. Hultgren; Göteborgs universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Septic arthritis is an inflammatory condition in joints caused by in situ residing bacteria accompanied by a septic reaction. Bacteria reach their target via the blood stream and the major human pathogen is Staphylococcus aureus. LÄS MER
