1. Migration in Prehistory : DNA and stable isotope analyses of Swedish skeletal material
Sammanfattning : The main aim of this thesis is to show how scientific methods may be used to look at migration in prehistory on the basis of archaeological material. The individuals examined represent the period 4 000 BC to 1 000 AD and have their geographical origins in various parts of Sweden.Ancient DNA analysis is employed in three cases. LÄS MER
2. Intramolecular isotope analysis reveals plant ecophysiological signals covering multiple timescales
Sammanfattning : Our societies' wellbeing relies on stable and healthy environments. However, our current lifestyles, growth-oriented economic policies and the population explosion are leading to potentially catastrophic degradation of ecosystems and progressive disruption of food chains. LÄS MER
3. Mysid growth, stable isotope fractionation, and energetics : implications for food web studies
Sammanfattning : Field data, stable isotope analyses of the Baltic Sea food web structure, and experimental studies of the functional response indicate that theomnivorous crustacean Mysis mixta (Crustacea, Mysidacea) has no distinct trophic position, but can potentially affect plankton communitystructure and compete with herring and sprat for the zooplankton. Toevaluate field data on mysid body constituents, abundance and populationstructure, and that of their potentialprey, basic knowledge of feeding behaviour, growth mechanisms, andreproductive capabilities are required. 5. Achieving carbon isotope mass balance in northern forest soils, soil respiration and fungi
Sammanfattning : Northern forests contain a large part of the global terrestrial carbon pool and it is unclear whether they will be sinks or sources for atmospheric carbon if the climate warms as predicted. Stable isotope techniques provide unique tools to study the carbon cycle at different scales but the interpretation of the isotope data is impaired by our inability to close the carbon isotope mass balance of ecosystems.
