1. Mind really does matter : The Neurobiology of Placebo-induced Anxiety Relief in Social Anxiety Disorder
Sammanfattning : The placebo effect, a beneficial effect attributable to a treatment containing no specific properties for the condition being treated, has been demonstrated in a variety of medical conditions. This thesis includes four studies aimed at increasing our knowledge on the neurobiology of placebo. LÄS MER
2. On the efficacy and prescription of serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses several controversial issues regarding commonly used antidepressants, including selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). To this end, patient-level data from 28 placebo-controlled trials on SSRIs and 13 corresponding trials on the SNRI duloxetine, were requested and obtained. LÄS MER
3. On the Effects of Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors in Major Depression
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the antidepressant effects of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and how these are reflected by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). To this end, we have assembled a large data set of placebo-controlled SSRI trials in major depression, and used this for a series of post-hoc patient-level analyses. LÄS MER
4. Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors in the environment : Effects of citalopram on fish behaviour
Sammanfattning : Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are a class of anxiolytic and anti-depressant drugs. SSRIs act on the evolutionarily ancient serotonergic system which is virtually identical throughout the vertebrate phylum. LÄS MER
5. Clinical and Pharmacological Aspects of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors in the Treatment of Depression in Old Age
Sammanfattning : Objective: The aim of the present thesis is to examine the pharmacokinetic and biochemical effects of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in the elderly. Background: Symptoms of depression are found in up to 15% of the elderly and the prevalence of major depression is reported to be about 3%.
