  1. 1. Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells and injections of microRNA as therapeutics for nervous system repair

    Författare :Mallappa K. Kolar; Lev N. Novikov; Paul J. Kingham; Mikael Wiberg; Elisabet Åkesson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spinal cord injury; peripheral nerve injury; mesenchymal stem cells; regeneration; neurotrophic factor; angiogenic factor;

    Sammanfattning : Traumatic injuries to the spinal cord (SCI) and peripheral nerve (PNI) affect several thousand people worldwide every year. At present, there is no effective treatment for SCI and despite continuous improvements in microsurgical reconstructive techniques for PNI, many patients are still left with permanent, devastating neurological dysfunction. 2. 2. Advances in spinal cord stimulation : enhancement of efficacy, improved surgical technique and a new indication

    Författare :Göran Lind; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :spinal cord stimulation;

    Sammanfattning : Introduction and aim: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been used for treatment of otherwise therapy-resistant chronic neuropathic pain for about four decades. However, 30-40 % of the patients do not benefit from SCS, despite careful case selection and technical advances. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Cervicothalamic tract termination and its cortical connections: anatomical studies in cats and ferrets

    Författare :Mengliang Zhang; Institutionen för experimentell medicinsk vetenskap; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsychology; Neurology; Carnivora; Cytoarchitecture; Immunocytochemistry; Compartmentation; Retrograde transport; Anterograde transport; Somatosensory cortex; Thalamus; Spinal cord; Lateral cervical nucleus; neurophysiology; Neurologi; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The termination and cortical connections of the cervicothalamic tract (CTT) were studied by neuroanatomical tract tracing techniques in cats and ferrets. After injections of wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate or biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into the cat lateral cervical nucleus (LCN), the most abundant CTT termination is present in the ventral posterior lateral nucleus (VPL). 4. 4. Neuronal tracers for fine caliber spinal primary afferents and their response to peripheral nerve injury

    Författare :H Fredrik Wang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Rat; Primary afferents; Dorsal root ganglion; Peripheral nerve injury; Spinal cord; Isolectin GSA I-B4; Soybean agglutinin; Cholera toxin B subunit; Horseradish peroxidase; Immunohistochemistry; Neuronal tracing;

    Sammanfattning : The isolectin B4 from Griffonia simplicifolia I (B4) and soybean agglutinin from the plant Glycine max (SBA), have been shown to bind to rat small-diameter dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, and to fibers and presumed terminals in laminae I-II of the spinal cord dorsal horn. In the present thesis, these lectins and/or their horseradish peroxidase (HRP) conjugates, have been investigated in the rat with regard to their usefulness as selective neuronal markers of and axonally transported tracers for somatic and/or visceral spinal primary afferents with fine caliber, including unmyelinated, axons. 5. 5. Treatment of pain behavior after spinal cord injury in rats with special emphasis on the role of adenosine receptors

    Författare :Margareta von Heijne; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :adenosine; adenosine receptors; allodynia; baclofen; central pain; clonidine; intrathecal; morphine; neuropathic pain; opioid; rat; R-phenylisopropyladenosine; spinal cord injury; tolerance;

    Sammanfattning : Central pain is a form of neuropathic pain occurring after injury or dysfunction in the central nervous system, including the spinal cord. Allodynia (pain to innocuous stimuli) to mechanical and cold stimulation is a common feature of central pain and it is often resistant to treatment. LÄS MER
