  1. 1. Spinal cord grafts : Interaction with cografts and effects of trophic factors

    Författare :Katarzyna Trok; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; cord injury; spinal cord transplants; regeneration; GDNF; neurotrophins; CNTF; 5HT; immunohistochemistryKatarzyna Trok; 1996ISBN 91-6;

    Sammanfattning : ÑSpinal cord injury is common in the modern society, often afflictsyoung individuals, and often has devastating consequences. The present workstudies possibilities to obtain better conditions for regeneration of the transectedspinal cord in rats, conditions under which spinal cord grafts are able toestablish structural and functional connections with "natural" targets, andeffects of a series of neurotrophic factors on spinal cord graft survival andgrowth. 2. 2. Spinal Cord Processing of Sensory Information: Spatial Organization and Adaptive Mechanisms

    Författare :Anders Levinsson; Malmö Diagnostisk radiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurologi; neurophysiology; neuropsychology; Neurology; transplantatioin; pain; sensorimotor; plasticity; reflex; neuropsykologi; neurofysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Principles for sensorimotor transformation and plasticity in the spinal cord and functional repair in the root-avulsed spinal cord were studied. A comparative study confirmed that the nociceptive withdrawal reflex (NWR) system is composed of reflex modules, with each performing a finely tuned transformation of skin sensory input to activity in one muscle. 3. 3. Stem Cell Transplantation in Dorsal Root Injury

    Författare :Carl Trolle; Elena Kozlova; Niklas Marklund; Karin Nordström; Michael Andäng; Mårten Risling; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sensory Neuron; Regeneration; Spinal Root; Stem Cell; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : After traumatic injuries to the brachial plexus there is a risk that one or more of the spinal roots are torn from the spinal cord, known as avulsion injury. This often leads to paralysis and chronic pain, notoriously difficult to treat with current pharmacotherapy. LÄS MER

  4. 4. On CNS injury and olfactory ensheathing cell engraftment strategies

    Författare :I-Hui Lee; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP;

    Sammanfattning : The intrinsic regenerative capacity of the adult mammalian central nervous system (CNS) is limited because of lack of nerve-growth stimulatory factors and presence of an insurmountable molecular environment for injured axons. This thesis aims to study neural regeneration following adult CNS injury, using rodent models of spinal cord injury, dorsal root avulsion, and Parkinson s disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Towards cell replacement therapy in Parkinson’s disease. Proteoglycans and Nogo-A as modulators of axonal growth in midbrain dopaminergic neurons

    Författare :Zuzanna Kurowska; Neural plasticitet och reparation; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; LUHMES cells; substantia nigra pars compacta; microarray; heparan sulphate 3-O-sulfotransferase; neurocan; midbrain dopaminergic neurons; grafting; embryonic stem cells; proteoglycans; glycosaminoglycans; Nogo-A; cell replacement therapy; Parkinson’s disease;

    Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease (PD) is currently the second most common neurodegenerative disorder (after Alzheimer’s disease). PD is diagnosed on its motor symptoms, which include akinesia, bradykinesia, rigidity, postural imbalance and resting tremor. It is well established that the motor symptoms develop due to lack of dopamine in the striatum. LÄS MER
