  1. 21. Functional brain imaging of sensorimotor dysfunction and restoration : investigations of discomplete spinal cord injury and deep brain stimulation for essential tremor

    Författare :Amar Awad; Johan Eriksson; Patric Blomstedt; Richard Levi; Lars Nyberg; Rick Helmich; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Sensorimotor control; fMRI; discomplete spinal cord injury; essential tremor; deep brain stimulation; cerebello-thalamo-cerebral circuit; Physiology; fysiologi; neurokirurgi; Neurosurgery; Neurology; neurologi; rehabiliteringsmedicin; Rehabilitation Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : The nervous system exists to generate adaptive behaviour by processing sensory input from the body and the environment in order to produce appropriate motor output, and vice versa. Consequently, sensorimotor dysfunction is the basis of disability in most neurological pathologies. LÄS MER

  2. 22. Upper extremity functioning in individuals with cervical or thoracic spinal cord injury - From body functions to participation

    Författare :Lamprini Lili; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; activity; autonomy; capacity; functioning; participation; performance; spinal cord injury; upper extremity;

    Sammanfattning : Background: A spinal cord injury (SCI) can lead to a range of impairments in various body functions, including the function of upper extremity, with severity varying from mild to severe. Long-term consequences for functioning and disability are a dynamic result of the injury characteristics and various other factors, requiring further knowledge regarding upper extremity functioning. 3. 23. Spasticity : an elusive problem after spinal cord injury

    Författare :Camilla Sköld; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis was to characterize spasticity in individuals and in a near total prevalence population with traumatic spinal cord (SCI) injury by assessment of: Article I) Relation between Self-reporting of symptoms, neurologic examination (ASIA), physical therapy examination, ROM and complications; Article II) Repeated self-rating (VAS), and the relation between movement- provoked MAS rating and self-rating after a repetitive passive movement intervention; Article III) Correlation between movement-provoked MAS rating during simultaneous recording of EMG thigh muscle activity; Article IV) Correlation between Isokinetic movement-provoked resistive torque measurements during recording of EMG thigh muscle activity; and Article V) FES induced changes in body composition evaluated by CT and in spasticity by using the methods from articles II-IV. Article I comprised the near-total prevalence population (n=354) of individuals with traumatic SCI in Stockholm. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Nerve injury induced pain and spinal cord stimulation

    Författare :Camilla Ultenius; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Neuropathic pain;

    Sammanfattning : Chronic neuropathic pain caused by injury to or disease in the nervous system is relatively common and results in major suffering, poor quality of life and incapacity. Such pain is a therapeutic challenge because a considerable portion of the patients fails to benefit from pharmacotherapy. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Calpain-Mediated Apoptosis in Motor Neurons of Adult Mouse Spinal Cord Slices

    Författare :HamidReza Momeni; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Calpain; Djurfysiologi; Animal physiology; Spinal cord; Organ culture; Mouse; Motor neurons; Caspase; Calpain inhibitor; Calpain activity; Apoptosis;

    Sammanfattning : Motor neuron degeneration is a critical phenomenon during spinal cord injuries and some neurodegenerative diseases. However, the mechanisms by which cell death is induced in these neurons are poorly understood. LÄS MER
