    Sammanfattning : Spontaneous speech and linguistic skills at age 6 1/2 years were studied in 284 children who required neonatal intensive cam (NIC) in 1980-1985 (cohort 1) and 40 healthy controls and in 230 NIC children born in 1986-1989 (cohort 2) and 71 neonatally healthy children born at term.Eight aspects of the children's spontaneous speech in a conversation were evaluated: Information, speech motor function, sound pattern, word finding, word selection, grammar, interaction and motivation, and ten linguistic skills were assessed according to a protocol including imitation tasks, comprehension tasks and auditory functions, phonemes and word fluency.     Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses identification and intervention of language and communication problems in children. The issue of identification is addressed in study I by investigating communicative ability in 18-month-old children, and in study II by exploring the prevalence of language and communication problems in children with complex problems, such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).     Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the vocabulary skills and the non-word repetition (NWR) performance of 99 typically developing (TD) 4­­–7-year-old Arabic-Swedish-speaking children and 11 Arabic-Swedish-speaking children with a diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). The children’s early language development, family backgrounds and language exposure patterns are explored through parental questionnaires, and for the DLD children also via interviews with parents, teachers and speech-language pathologists regarding their developmental history, language skills and communicative behaviour.
