1. Groundwater-Seawater Interactions : Seawater Intrusion, Submarine Groundwater Discharge and Temporal Variability and Randomness Effects
Sammanfattning : Fresh groundwater quality and availability in coastal areas is affected by seawater intrusion into coastal aquifers, and coastal water quality and ecosystem status may be significantly affected by groundwater pollutants that are transported into coastal waters by submarine groundwater dis-charge (SGD). This thesis uses an overall regional perspective for investigating: i) seawater intru-sion and its possible control in sustainable coastal groundwater management; ii) SGD and its relevant quantification as one interacting part among the diverse main regional pathways of freshwater and tracer/pollutant inputs from land to sea; and iii) the integrated system functioning of both i) and ii) as main components of the same coastal groundwater system. 2. Modelling Freshwater-Seawater Interactions in Coastal Aquifers : Long-term Trends and Temporal Variability Effects
Sammanfattning : Over-exploitation of coastal aquifers causes seawaterintrusion and eventually contamination of groundwater wells inmany parts of the world. Desalination of brackish water andartificial recharge of treated wastewater may then be asustainable strategy for managing groundwater supply inwater-stressed regions. LÄS MER
3. Crossing the threshold : Visualization design and conceptual understanding of evolution
Sammanfattning : The theory of evolution is considered the unifying theory of biology. An accurate understanding of evolution is vital both for the understanding of diverse topics in biology, but also for societal issues such as antibiotic resistance or biodiversity. LÄS MER
4. Evolving germs – Antibiotic resistance and natural selection in education and public communication
Sammanfattning : Bacterial resistance to antibiotics threatens modern healthcare on a global scale. Several actors in society, including the general public, must become more involved if this development is to be countered. The conveyance of relevant information provided through education and media reports is therefore of high concern. LÄS MER
5. Space-Time Processing Applications for Wireless Communications
Sammanfattning : Wireless mobile communication networks are rapidly growing at an incredible rate around the world and a number of improved and emerging technologies are seen to be critical to the improved economics and performance of these networks. The technical revolution and continuing growth of mobile radio communication systems has been made possible by extraordinary advances in the related fields of digital computing, high-speed circuit technology, the Internet and, of course, digital signal processing.
