  1. 1. Space Plasma Dynamics : Instabilities, Coherent Vortices and Covariant Parametrization

    Författare :David Sundkvist; Jan-Erik Wahlund; Andris Vaivads; Stuart Bale; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; space physics; plasma; instabilities; turbulence; coherent structures; vortex; self-organization; magnetosphere; waves; electromagnetism; covariant; space instrumentation; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Sammanfattning : The magnetospheric cusps are two funnel-like regions of Earth's magnetosphere where solar wind plasma can have direct access to the ionosphere. The cusps are very dynamic regions where wave-particle interactions continuously take place and redistribute energy among different particle populations. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The importance of waves in space plasmas : Examples from the auroral region and the magnetopause

    Författare :Gabriella Stenberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; Plasma waves; magnetospheric physics; magnetopause; auroral region; wave distribution function; space exploration; reconnection; current tubes; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; rymdfysik; Space Physics;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis discusses the reasons for space exploration and space science. Space plasma physics is identified as an essential building block to understand the space environment and it is argued that observation and analysis of space plasma waves is an important approach.Space plasma waves are the main actors in many important processes. 3. 3. Solitary waves and enhanced incoherent scatter ion lines

    Författare :Jonas Ekeberg; Lars Eliasson; Kristof Stasiewicz; Jan Trulsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plasma waves and instabilities; nonlinear phenomena; solitons and solitary waves; ionosphere; Sun: corona; incoherent scatter radar; MHD; plasmavågor och instabiliteter; ickelinjära fenomen; solitoner och solitära vågor; jonosfär; solen: korona; inkoherent spridningsradar; MHD; Geocosmophysics and plasma physics; Geokosmofysik och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; Plasma physics; Plasmafysik; Non-linear dynamics; chaos; Icke-linjär dynamik; kaos; fysik; Physics; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses solitary waves and their significance for auroral particle acceleration, coronal heating and incoherent scatter radar spectra. Solitary waves are formed due to a balance of nonlinear and dispersive effects. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Waves in space plasmas : Lower hybrid cavities and simple-pole distribution functions

    Författare :Anders Tjulin; Mats André; Hans Pécseli; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; space physics; plasma; waves; dispersion relations; lower hybrid cavities; Cluster; magnetosphere; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik;

    Sammanfattning : Waves are a fundamental feature in many parts of physics, since they transport energy without transporting matter. This is the case also in space physics. Waves are responsible for energy transport both between different parts of space and between different particles in the space plasma. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Escape to space or return to venus : ion flows measured by venus express

    Författare :Moa Persson; Yoshifumi Futaana; Hans Nilsson; Maria Hamrin; Dmitrij Titov; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Venus; water; escape; planetary physics; oxygen; O ; hydrogen; H ; ions; space physics; space plasma physics; Venus Express; ASPERA-4; IMA; spacecraft measurements; rymd- och plasmafysik; Space and Plasma Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The present-day Venusian atmosphere is crushingly dense, extremely hot and arid. Yet, in its early history, Venus presumably had a massive amount of water, which, if spread evenly over the surface, provided a water depth of 10s to 100s of meters. Therefore, over the course of the atmospheric evolution, the water must have been removed from Venus. LÄS MER
