This study uses Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of the chronotope to examine the house in Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861), Elizabeth Stoddard's The Morgesons (1862), Octavia Butler's Kindred (1979), and Marilynne Robinson's Housekeeping (1980). Sammanfattning : In the eerie world of Gothic literature, sound represents a source of fear, anxiety, and discomfort, and it mostly affects its listeners through the invisible character of the experience. Sound is integral to nineteenth-century Gothic short stories with their panoply of liminal and polyphonic oppositions, as well as a claustrophobic feel of spaces, fearful listeners, and the return of the repressed.
